I heard that there was a filter inside the fuel tank, but I also heard that there is no actual fuel filter...supposedly there is a fuel strainer located inside the fuel tank. Usually an inline fuel filter is between the fuel tank and the engine.
Where and How Is the Fuel Filter Changed
Some do have the filter in the tank. This link for a 2004 4cyl Kia Optima indicates that there is a chance, depending on your production date, that the filter could be exterior to the tank ... in the rear of the car near the fuel tank on the drivers side.
One fuel filter is in the fuel pump of the Express Chevy 3500, which is used to push fuel or gasoline through the fuel line. The fuel pump is inside the gas tank. This fuel filter is a mesh or screen that prevents large foreign particles for entering the fuel pump. Access to the fuel filter is obtained by removing the fuel tank and then the fuel pump from the fuel tank.
Second Fuel Filter Location
The second fuel filter is within the fuel line itself. After the fuel pumps extracts fuel from the gasoline tank and into the fuel line, fuel flows through the line and through another filter on the driver's side of the Express Chevy 3500 under the front wheel suspension. This fuel filter cleans the small particles that escaped from the fuel tank.
Fuel Filter Types
The year of your Chevy Express 3500 determines what type of fuel filter is installed on the van. The fuel tank filter is always mesh or screen, but the fuel line filter can be of three different types. Two types are snap-on filters, while one type has clip-on ends.
raise the car and support it. then go to the fuel tank and you will see the fuel lines and how they connect. you will have to support the fuel tank and unbolt the tank straps and lower the fuel tank enough that you can get your hands around the filter. disconnect the fuel lines unfasten the filter from the holding bracket and remove the filter. be aware you will have gas dripping. re-assemble in reverse order.
the in-line filter is in the fuel line between the tank and the engine, seldom do you have to even touch the tank much less remove it in order to replace that filter. there is a screen on the pump inlet of the in-tank fuel pump and most likely you are going to have to drop the tank in order to replace the pump or the fuel level sender. make sure there is not a service access hole in the rear of the car such as under the spare tire which could give you access to the top of the tank. on the other hand it is not unusual to find yourself in a situation where a lot of the fuel line must be replaced when you replace the in-line filter. as such you may find yourself with no room to connect the new fuel line to the nipple on top of the tank, without lowering the tank a bit.
The fuel filter is part of the Fuel Tank Unit which includes the fuel pump, fuel filter, and sending unit. The Fuel Tank Unit is located in the top of the fuel tank and is accessed through a panel on the floor of the trunk. By removing the spare tire and carpeting you will see a round cover in the trunk floor panel. Once this access penal is removed, you can look straight down onto the top of the fuel tank and see the top of the fuel tank unit. That will be the piece that will need to be removed to get to the fuel filter.
The Equinox does not have a scheduled replacement fuel filter. There is a filter inside the fuel tank before the fuel pump (pump inside the tank too) which is designed to last the vehicles lifetime. It doesn't always work out that way as some folks end up with a bad tank of fuel from time to time.
If you are having fuel flow issues you may have to remove the fuel tank to service the fuel system. Thank you for using FixYa.
your cars fuel filter is inside your fuel tank along with the fuel pump....you need to remove the back seat to give way in removing the top cover of the fuel tank that holds the fuel pump and filter...no need to drain the tank with its fuel...fuel filter replacement interval is every 20,000 km. or 12500 miles.
