The thermostat housing is where the top radiator hose connects to the engine. It may have a coolant temp sensor in it as well, it has a wire plugged into it. Replace them both.

Follow you upper radiator hose and the hose will be attached to the thermostat housing. Its usually bolted down with 2 Screws. Once you unscrew those 2 screws lift it up and the thermostat should be in plain view. Make sure to replace the gaskets with the thermostat too.

Any repair shop should be able to do this service. to give location of thermostat, what size engine.

Have you tried Googling 'Download 2002 Montero Manual'? I did it for my 94 and found a couple of download locations.

Perhaps, but they had the knowledge of what do do and you didn't. Someone went to school and studied hard to learn how, Would you prefer some knucklehead spent all day trying to figure out what and how and still charged you a bunch? .

Has it overheated lately?
My wife overheated our Galant and it just stopped working, it cranks but that's it.
I pulled the sparkplugs and found them wrapped in a gewey jelly like substance. Like an oil/antifreeze combo.
I am going to replace the entire motor for $1000 as taking it to the mechanics to theorize and practice may cost more.
