The delayed is referred to as turbo lag and the smoke is fuel not completely burned since the fuel system tends to be a little rich when the turbo has not attained boosting RPM. Other than to have your injectors cleaned/replaced, the injector pump re-calibrated and/or the turbo checked for leakage, nothing much could really be done. Alternatives are to use fuel additives, re-check of the computer's map/software and/or change of driving habits. The idea is not to floor the accelerator until the turbo has reached the designated RPM where it kicks in.

grey smoke on acceleration is NORMAL for this engine,white or black avoid like the plague.....you could use an injector cleaner,redexe/wynns or similar.i use it every 25k,and (touch wood) no funny noises/smoke YET.expect oil consumption to be better than 500k per litre or a rebuild is needed.
Identifing the smoke color tells you where it is coming from. Black smoke comes from fuel, so it is running rich or not fully igniting the mixture. White smoke comes from oil and often happens under very heavy engine load. On acceleration this could be the piston rings allowing blow-by, on deceleration this could be the valve seals leaking. Blueish smoke is often coolant, indicating a head gasket leak.
You didn't state iof this happens during a moving gear change, or if it has happened since you physically changed some of the gears in the car. On a TDi, I would follow the factory recommendations for all engine lubricants and additives.
Hi ...... It sounds as if the turbo bearings or seal has blown, white smoke is a sign ........ or your head gasket. Try taking compression readings across the engine and/or looking into the expansion bottle for evidence of oil (head gasket def'ly).

MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR THERE ABOUT £6O WHEN THEY PLAY UP THE CAR WONT IDLE PROPERLY AND POOR RUNNING/HESITATES BEFORE IT PICKS UP AGAIN, NOT SURE ON THE BLACK SMOKE THOUGH, GOOD LUCK .
i would not worry too much about it as diesel cars do let out black sulphur when accelerating it might need a good run at a faster speed to clear it out if it is driven around town a lot at lower speeds
