  • Check to see if your engine is leaking oil and/or coolant. This causes your engine to overheat and if it's not fixed, it can cause it to freeze up.

  • 2

Check your oil and antifreeze for contamination. If your oil or antifreeze looks different in any way, have it tested by a lab to determine if contamination has occurred.

  • 4

Check the level of fluid in your radiator. If your car suddenly loses a lot of coolant or the level is very low, this can indicate a cracked block.

  • 5

Look for excessive smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe.

  • 6

Check the radiator's coolant mixture of antifreeze and water to determine if it has frozen.

  • 7

Check to see if the engine has overheated severely. Overheating can be caused by another engine problem, but the effect of the overheating can be a cracked block.

Check your oil for signs of coolant, look for white smoke coming out the tailpipe,or get the engine pressure tested.Plugs may also get a sludge buildup sometimes. The Cavalier does have a reputation for bad blocks I'm afraid.Best of luck to you.

2000 Cavalier crankshaft sensor stuck in block

Happened to me many times. The sensor gets hot and the plastic cracks, which makes the sensor expand in the hole.
If you have sprayed the hole with penetrating oil, the next thing is to pretend it is a broken bolt and drill it out. You may be able to drill into it and screw a large sheet metal screw in to pull against.
Just be careful not to push it into the block.

I have a 1996 Chevy Cavalier. It slowed down and would not restart. Everytime you try to crank it puffs of smoke come from the center of the engine and below. We were told it is most likely the block. Is...

If the engine block has cracks or has worn it would be costly to replace (the block is most of the engine). Puffs of smoke would indicate a hole in a piston or severe damage to rings. You might have the engine checked out by a shop to see if it is salvageable. They would do compression checks and check for things like oil control problems. So it's repairable but likely expensive.

I have a 2000 2.2 chevy cavalier that i buy today and it have oil in the reservoir bottle what can it be plz help

If it has oil in the coolant resivoir bottle it has most likely got a blown head gasket or a cracked head/block. It will require diagnosing and repair which will be expensive. I hope you got it cheap. Fitting a second hand engine may be a good option as you dont know how hot this one may have gotten.

    Head gaskets

There is really no difference between a blown or cracked head gasket. In either case the gasket would have to be replaced. Generally the term "cracked" is used when referring specifically to the cylinder head/s its/them selves. If the cylinder head is cracked it is a much more expensive repair.

Water leaking from a freeze plug and water in the oil pan in a 283 small block chevy engine

If you have a bad or leaky freeze plug, also known as soft plugs, it needs to be replaced. Your brass plugs are the best, and in some hard to get to places there are rubber plugs that can be adjusted to fix the problem. But if you have oil in the oil pan, assuming no one put water in the engine. You probably overheated the engine enough to acquire a cracked head gasket. Normaly that's the problem, could be a cracked head also, but more than likely a gasket. If you decide to remove the heads and replace the gaskets, good idea to have the heads resurfaced.
