1997 buick lesabre has intermitant speedometer/odometer

Sometimes the speedometer/odometer quits working while the car is in motion, then will return to working at some later point. Sometimes it won't work at all if the car is not idled for a couple of minutes upon start up. Local garage did computer diagnostic while the speedometer was acting up. No codes showed up. However, the tech. noted the the wheel speeds all gave a good read out, but the vehicle speed read read out was "0" while the car was in motion. (?) I should also note that the tackometer is irratic upon initial start up and then settles out. The car runs beautiful despite these guage problems. Do you have and info as to what repair needs to be done?

I have the same problem on my 1997 LeSabre The speeedometer started out going up to 85 mph while on cruise control that was set at 70 mph. Now the speedometer works occasionally but the readings do not seem acurate, they register less than what I'm going. The odometer doesn't work when the speedeometer isn't but noticed yesterday the odometer was working and the speedeometer wasn't.

My problem similar to that of wedelsfire.  Most of the time the speedometer and tachometer do not work at all.  Sometimes the tachometer will work for a brief period of time, but even then it is mostly erratic.  The speedometer rarely works at all.  When it does work, it is only for a brief time.  When the speedometer isn't working, the odometer doesn't work.

Is a repair feasible or will I need a new unit?  Does Buick or GM offer any assistance with this problem?

Possible ground wire fault with dash board unit. If it is a cable operated spedo, the cable end (small square cap) may be rounding off on one end.

Sounds as if it may be an instrument cluster issue. Check the plug at the cluster, if it is ok then travel to your nearest GM dealer and ask them to see if there is a software update addressing your issue. They will likely charge you a diagnostic fee, but it will be cheaper than throwing parts at it in the long run.

I have a 1997 Lesabre and the speedometer works fine sometimes and other times it registers less than the actual speed or it bounces around, all connections are fine, good ground and good circuit board, the speedometers are known to have issues, replacing the speedometer rectifies the problem in most cases, there are 2 different ones, bring the number from the back of the cluster circuit board with ou if you go to buy a new unit.

You most likely have a defective gauge cluster assembly. GM offers repaired clusters for some models, but they can be costly. (300-400bucks)
