Is there a known problem causing reduced battery life?

  • Anonymous Oct 17, 2010

No dis intended. The specifics were in the heading so I didn't realize I needed to be redundant in the phrasing of the question itself. The question put to me was simply "Was this solution helpful". The answer was very simply "No". Now, the folow-up was much more helpful. Thank you very much.

The alternator not charging, the quality of the battery, the brand of battery, electrical draws, high starter draw, extended cranking, and leaving the lights on and totally draining the battery (I realize the obvious in this situation but the battery will also sulfate when this happens so even after recharging the battery life will be reduced) will all influence the life of a battery.

I meant a known problem specific to the 2002 Olds Aurora V-8 and reduced battery life.

No. Electrical draws can be anything at any time. The more common things that I run into in general are aftermarket radios, dvd players, and accessory lights that stay on. Those would be glove box lights, vanity mirrors, under-hood lights, and trunk lights.

If you battery keeps goind dead than the first thing you need to check for is a draw. This is very easy to do with an amp meter or a low amp probe. With a meter you will hook it up in series with either of the battery cables. One lead to the battery one lead to the cable end. with a low amp probe you will keep the battery connected and clamp the probe around the cable. Ideally you will want to see less than .050 amps and more realistically less that .025 amps. If its more than that than you have a draw. You can start by removing the fuses one at a time until you find the source of the draw. Than figure out what devices that fuse controls and narrow it down even further.

If there is no draw and the alternator is putting out 14 volts than I would be suspicious of the battery. It is not common but a battery can develop an internal draw. I see one about once a year that has this. The way to confirm this would be to disconnect the battery and leave for the time frame that it takes to go dead. Reinstall the battery cables and see if the car starts. If it doesn't than the battery.

BTW my first response included all the known problems that would cause reduced battery life and was worthy of a better rating than ones thumbs up (in all fairness you didn't ask for specifics).

On my 2010 Silverado the message center says engine power reduced, service stabilitrack and service traction control system. What would cause these messages. It started after sitting for a few days

The fault codes have nothing to do with it sitting for a few days. There are sensors that work with your ABS brakes and TCS to help your car maintain control when corning briskly under load. You probably have a bad sensor on one of the wheels. Recommend you get the Haynes manual to see exactly how to test and replace them. A multimeter will help too.

HOW to get 2006 HHR up to normal engine power? 2006 HHR engine loses power abruptly or barely keep going. "Reduced Engine Power" on display. Chev dealer replaced throttle body; problem persists.

I agree that all this new technology could have been used to make life easier instead of which it has been deliberately and calculatingly misused to make life harder and more expensive.

I suggest obtaining and using an obd recorder. The dealer might have one to loan you.
Plugged into the obd port it continuously records engine management conditions and data to be reviewed later on a standard laptop or desktop computer. It might need an expert to understand what is happening to cause the fault but sometimes that is the best or only way to find an intermittent fault.

There is one condition that can affect some engines without being recorded as a fault and that is a turbo over-boost condition caused by the incorrect operation of the turbo wastegate. This is generally a control or sensor problem and instantly kills the engine power when it happens. Switching off the engine and restarting allows normal driving again until inadvertently too much acceleration is used again and the cycle repeats.

I hope this helps.

How long a car battery will last?

There is no definite user period on batteries and that is why there is a warranty. Factors affecting the life of a battery are ambient temperature Cold weather affects batteries that are below good condition. Charge rate --over charging boils of batteries and buckles the plates--Low electrolyte levels affects the life as it causes sulfation of the plates. --vibration of the battery removes the lead paste from the cell plates and reduces the life of the battery (Diesel engine problems). High discharge rates over heats the battery cells and buckles plates causing internal shorts.---crap around the terminals and on the battery posts reduces the ability to pass current and so the battery appears flat /and /or will not charge.

The brand of the battery and the price is no guarantee to quality and long life but proper battery care helps.

What does a volvo s80 code reduced engine power mean?

The ETM (electronic throttle module) has been known to cause the "Reduced Engine Performance" code on volvos. However, there are many sensors which could have triggered this problem. If your check engine light is on, have it scanned for free at an autozone for any engine codes which may point to the culprit.

Battery goes dead if not driven for a few days

That would happen because of two reasons 1.Your battery needs to be replaced and has lost its life. 2.The battery is known to die if not used for some time, keep charging it by running your vehicle more often.

Also, a vehicle with reduced engine power may be faulty requiring evaluation lest becomes extensive damage. The parts that contribute towards a vehicle mechnical propulsion are pistons, rings, as significant combustors. The contribution parts are spark plugs, fluel intact injectors, caberator cloggings, or simply gasoline inefficiency. A significant amount of power is acquired from the balancing tires, brakes, allignments and the like. Usually the perpose of the vehicle may not require to have enormous engine in terms of speed. Trail blaser have towing capacity requiring torc rather than speed for the most part. However, the multifunction feature may have cause the vehecle to wear down in some features. For example, torc producing vehicle like 4 wheel drives are least required for smooth driving zones else the gripping brackets come loose compromising the both toc and speed.

We have an 2000 mpv . got a new battery which went dead after one year now the new battery also has gone dead the alternator was replaced and we are wondering if we bought the correct size battery

well normally the manufactures would list a battery type in your manual or the manufactures of the battery has a catalog with the different vehicles and the recommended battery..

things to check..

1.) look for a surface discharge meaning that some stuff on the vehicle is pulling more power than it should or some device isnt shutting off properly, like the trunk light or door lights etc..

2.) check that the alternator is pushing 14.2 volts to the battery ,, around 13.6 to 14.5 is fine any more or any less will greatly reduce battery life, this can be caused by defective wiring as well so have that checked

3.) if you have an amplifier that isnt cutting off properly well that can cause this as well by greatly reducing battery life. if you have an amplifier you would need a bigger than slandered battery and in some cases alternator upgrades..

Ok points when buying a battery..

1.) buy a battery that has the longest warranty period you can get,, If its prorated its just like not having any warranty..

2.) Buy Spectype (OEM), or brand name ones like AcDelco, Die Hard, Bosch etc..

3.) Go with a slightly larger battery if you car needs 550cca (which i think it does) go with 850cc or around that, this helps if you have a surface discharge and basically prolongs life..
