1996 Elantra 1.6GLS- J2 switching off

Once the engine is quite warmed up the idle becomes erratic and it switches off unless the foot is on the gas. It won't start up rightaway again. There is also smoke coming out of the exhaust. Suspect either injectors or fuel pump (fuel filter changed 15000 k's ago) but if it is the pump I also need information on how to replace it by myself and whether I should buy brand new or a used pump.

24 seven is quite right. One week later the engine overheated although the coolant level in the bottle was fine. As I never open the radiator cap, I did not know that the radiator was empty. I drove the car slowly to a mac. On filling water found the water pump to be leaking-situation was worsened by a small crack on the plastic part on top of the radiator. Starting then was impossible as pressure pushed the water out from the radiator cap proving that the head gasket was blown. Head is now being skimmed and gasket replaced. I have to find out therafter if the fuel problem still exists or not(needs lots of cash).

I think idle speed control actuator must also be checked.
If you are not familiar with such repairs better take it to an authorized service shop.

fuel pump revoval Remove the rear seat cushion. 2. To reduce the internal pressure of the fuel lines and hoses, first start the engine and then disconnect the electrical fuel pump connector. Be sure to reduce the fuel pressure before disconnecting the fuel main pipe and hose otherwise fuel will spill out. 3. Disconnect the battery cable from the negative terminal of the battery. 4. Remove the high pressure hose and fuel return hose. 5. Remove the fuel pump assembly.

Ford Taurus idle missing

It can be issue with IAC( idle air control valve) causing the problem.

There are many other possibilities causing these idle issues.Engine idles rough.

REPLACED THE EGR VACUUM SOLENOID NOW IDLES RUFF AND RPM GO UP AND DOWN AT IDLE

It can be issue with IAC( idle air control valve) causing the problem.
