This warning light (TRAC OFF) sporadically comes on and stays on for no apparent reason. The car (2001 Chevy Cavalier, just over 16,000 miles, auto trans, 2200 SFI 4 cyl. engine) runs and drives fine and is regularly serviced. Had a local service facility look at this once and was told all they did was disconnect the battery for a period to allow the "system to reset itself." Consequently, I've done this a few times myself. The light went off, stayed off, but, as mentioned, sporadically comes back on. I've searched the internet for an answer and could not find one.
Any ideas or a solution???????????????????????
Thanks.

Sometimes it's a complaint with the ABS braking system. If it comes on and you have no other problems and stays on for while, check your brakes. I have had this issue before and had my brakes replaced. They were worn but for some reason were not squeaking.
My boyfriends '01 Cavalier kept doing that and eventually when the "trac off" light would come on, the car would start trying to die and the engine would start shaking really hard and it ended up being one of the coil packs needing to be replaced. Also my brother had one that would do the same thing but it drove fine and he would just pull the e-brake up to where it would click only 3 times while pulling it up and it woud turn off.
Trac off / Service Traction control system
This light or indicator on the dash or message center is usually related to
the ABS system, and sometimes to the check engine light.
When this is on, the traction system is disabled. A problem in the ABS
system is usually the cause, and would have to be scanned for codes.
Sometimes and engine problem that causes a check engine light will also
cause the TRAC OFF light to come on certain vehicles. In this case, the
PCM would have to be scanned for codes and repaired first. Then the
traction control system codes can be cleared.

This has happened to me multiple times.. Each time I found my emergency brake had slipped even the tinyest bit from its off position. Always check that first.
... If you turn the system off by moving the shift lever
to FIRST (1) or SECOND (2), the warning light will
come on and stay on. To turn the system back on,
move the shift lever back to a position other than
FIRST (1) or SECOND (2). The warning light
should go off. (See "Enhanced Traction System"
in the Index for more information.)
The warning light will come on when you set your
parking brake with the engine running, and it will
stay on if your parking brake doesn't release fully.
If the transaxle shift lever is in any position other
than FIRST (1) or SECOND (2) and the warning
light stays on after your parking brake is fully
released, it means there's a problem with the system.
If the traction control system is affected by an
engine-related problem, the system will turn off
and the warning light will come on.
If the Enhanced Traction System warning light comes
on and stays on for an extended period of time when the
transaxle shift lever is in any position other than FIRST
(1) or SECOND (2) your vehicle needs service.

I've rac Off light and Service Engine Soon light comes on. I've had several repairs on the Service Engine Light, but the problem still exists. I was told that the computer doesn't show anything wrong and that the Trac off has nothing to do with theService Engine light.
The Trac light goes off but the Servie Engine light remains on. Sometimes they both go off and then the Service Engine light might come on again, several days later.
My 2001 cavalier's trac light comes on and when it reaches 2nd gear it revs up and the tach dies and the speedometer dies then shoots up and jerks and revs. It seems to run fine but when you go, it acts up. I don't think its the tranny because it happened suddenly.
i have a 2003 cavalier and trac off light came on and now the car will not start at all. it sitting on the side of higway as we type. can anyone help?
Tract light came on and engine lost power and now won't start. Any solutions?
I too have the same issue since Sep 08 -Trac Off comes on for no apparent reason on my 2001 Oldmobile Alero. I've had the problem checked out with an engine diagonostic, and nothing comes up wrong. Otherwise, drives great.
