Check the timing belt, if it's broke the car won't start. It's a non-interference engine, so just replace the belt if needed, the engine is otherwise undamaged. While you are at it, replace the water pump and timing belt pulleys, not much extra labor for stuff that's going to have to be replaced one of these days anyway.
To be sure not to upset the timing, tie the belt to the camshaft and the crankshaft pulleys with a bit of string. remember to take this off when you have finished fitting the pump.
This is easiest to get to if you drive the car up on ramps and work from both underneath and above.
Remove the undercage protective shields to expose it.
Belt will cost about $10.
Hi, found a site called TeamCapri.com they have step by step directions with diagrams that are printable. That should help you. The section is called removing and replacing the Timing Belt. Take care
its pretty easy to do so all you have to do is remove both drive belts then unbolt the four bolts on the bottom pully. the double will then come off. remove the top and bottom timing covers in that order you will have to remove the water pump pully first. then mark your timing belt to ensure you get it back in time properly when reassembling. then loosen the timing belt tensenor pull timing belt off and let hang. then remove the water pump bolt then water pump. Install in reverse order. Make sure you clean the mating surface for the water pump.
according to a manual , the crank key will point to arrow , the intake cam should have an letter i aligned with arrow on belt cover and exhaust cam should have letter e aligned with arrow on belt cover , and as always rotate the engine 2 full turns to inspect timing marks before cranking or trying to start the engine . if you haven't taken the original belt off yet , paint your marks for quicker reference .
