There is a nub that is on the brake peddle arm. It is plastic. It presses against the normally closed brake light switch (that means the light is normally on if the switch is NOT depressed) and turns it off when the brake is in the normal resting position. This nub can get brittle and break. When it breaks the switch does not get depressed and the light stays on even though the pedal has returned to its resting position. There is an identical one right next to it for switching off the cruise control. I had both of these nubs break. You can buy a new nub and put it in place.

My 2002 Ford Focus brake lights stay on in drive, cruise control doesnt work and the hatch button in car doesnt work. I noticed the middle rear brake light is also out.

If you brake lights stay on and the cruise control doesn't work then I would be looking at the brake light switch at the top of the brake pedal as if there is power passing through it then it cuts out the cruise control. The same as if you put your foot on the brake cuts out the cruise control. The hatch button will be another problem like a fuse or broken cable or failed latch solenoid. As to the rear middle brake light try checking the bulb first.

How do I permanently disengage the brake-transaxle shift interlock on a '97 malibu? The fuse and brake lights work fine. Do I take off the console and disconnect something?

It will be in your engine compartment. It will be a black box, pull the lid on it. On the inside cover of the lid it will tell you what each fuse is for. Find the fuse that says something to do with rear brake lights. When you replace the fuse make sure it it the exact same size, like replace a 5amp fuse with another 5 amp fuse. Also when you look on the inside cover of the fuse box lid there should be a couple empty spaces with fuses in them, these are spare fuses for your car. You can use one of these but just make sure to replace it.

When I step on the brake the cruise control will not disengage

There are 2 switches at the brake pedal. 1 is the brakelight switch & the other is the cruise disengage switch. Possibly 2 faulty switches but you should diagnose first. Check brake light fuse, then disconect brakelight switch, bridge plug brakelight switch if lights come on = faulty switch, check globes

1500 parking brakes wont disengage

This may sound like a silly answer, but, how often did you use your parking brake previously?
Parking brake cables tend to rust inside the sheath if they are not used very often.
When you apply the parking brake, you use a fair amount of physical force to engage the park brake.
If you do not use your parking brake very often, the inside of the cable may be rusted enough that when you release the park brake, the cable will not release (cable will not slide inside the sheath), as there is only the pressure of the brake shoe return springs disengage the park brake.

HOW TO CHANGE A BRAKE LIGHT

Open the rear hatch and look for two philips or torx screws side mounted by the brake lights. Sometimes there are two additional locking dowels that just need a quick bump with your palm to disengage.
