There is a nub that is on the brake peddle arm. It is plastic. It presses against the normally closed brake light switch (that means the light is normally on if the switch is NOT depressed) and turns it off when the brake is in the normal resting position. This nub can get brittle and break. When it breaks the switch does not get depressed and the light stays on even though the pedal has returned to its resting position. There is an identical one right next to it for switching off the cruise control. I had both of these nubs break. You can buy a new nub and put it in place.
The rear brake lights work off the brake light peddle look under the dash at the brake light switch to see if it is unplugged or broken
