Idle air control valve or throttle position sensor
Could be a bad power steering pressure sensor . This sensor inputs a signal to the PCM - engine computer when low speed an higher load on the engine ,such as turning , in return the PCM is suppose to raise the idle so it won't stall .
Actually your vehicle doesn't have a power steering pressure switch , has different system
Variable Effort Steering System Description and Operation
The Variable Effort Steering (VES) system controls the amount of steering effort needed to steer the vehicle as vehicle speed, or steering wheel position sensor input changes. The Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) controls an Electronic Variable Orifice (EVO) actuator located in the power steering pump's output fluid orifice. The actuator consists of an electromagnetic coil and a pintle valve which moves in and out of an orifice regulating power steering fluid flow. The EBCM commands current to the actuator from 0-619 ma. At low speeds, no current is commanded to the actuator and the pintle valve is fully retracted, which provides maximum fluid flow and full assist for easy turning and parking maneuvers. At higher speeds, more current is commanded to the actuator causing the pintle valve to move closer to the orifice which decreases fluid flow providing firmer steering (road feel) and directional stability. The VES system uses the steering wheel position sensor input to sense abrupt driving maneuvers. When the EBCM detects an abrupt maneuver, less current is commanded to the actuator to provide full steering assist. The VES system also uses the two rear Antilock Brake System (ABS) wheel speed sensor inputs to determine vehicle speed.
Your best bet , take it to a qualified repair shop . Need to hook up diagnostic test equipment , no guessing here .

SOURCE: 2002 sunfire won't start
Do a compression test. When you over heated it it may have blown a head gasket or cracked the head.
SOURCE: Surging
My wifes 1999 Sunfire has had problems cutting out and surging , spent 700.00 at local GM dealer still no results. I read somewhere on the web try to changing the Throttle Position Sensor. Changing the TPS has worked both times to fix the problem, for some reason the TPS failure will not send a code. We have had the car since 2000 and the chinging of the TPS has solved the problems bothy times. The TPS at NAPA in Canada is 74.00 in the US most likely cheaper, try this first based on my experience, GM will not help all they do is read codes.

Get a free code at AutoZone or some other place. It could be one of the many sensor problems. Especially the idler sensor or Map, Maf, and on from there.
Testimonial: "Thanks! I never thought about going there. It give me a good place to start!"
SOURCE: 92 Accord occasionally fluctuates it's idling
The faults for this can be the spark plugs and or the spark plug wires as well
Testimonial: "Thanks. I think they were changed already"
