2004 Doge Ram 2500 5.7 Hemi 190K mile had oil pressure gauge drop to ZERO and check gauges light come on and engine shut down.. Check oil 1 guart low, add oil. let cool. crank up, good gauges drove home 45 miles at 55- 70. Less than 1/2 mile from gate again no oil pressure and warning light about check gauges, coasted into yard. At no time did the Check Engine light come on. This AM all fluids at full. Cranks up like always gauges show normal. What is this? Oil pressure sending unit at the oil filter? Oil Pump (I have never heard of one stopping and starting)?

If the valve lifters are quiet you most likely have oil pressure even with gauge showing "0".Sounds like the oil pressure switch going bad.I would try that first.

SOURCE: Oil pressure suddenly dropped to zero.

Hello, let's see what you need.
Yes, the pump can go out that fast.
Do not start your engine. Go out and check the oil. If you have plenty of oil you will need to tow it to a shop. If your out of oil check the the drain plug on the oil pan and check the oil filter.

I have a 01dodge RAM 1500 and the oil gauge keeps going from 40 to 0 and the check gauges light keeps coming on but I checked the oil and it's fine, what could be the reason for this

1. You need to have an independent oil pressure gauge hooked up to the engine to check the oil pressures at various RPMs and to verify the 40 to zero drop. This will eliminate any issue with the pressure gauge or the sending unit.

2. The oil pressure variation can be caused by an intermittent blockage in the oil pick up or an intermittent sticking oil pressure relief valve. I would possibly suspect the latter if you are getting good pressure and it is intermittently dropping to zero and going back up again..
If you or previous owners have not maintained the engine with frequent oil changes you will get a sludge build up problem in the engine and this will be evident by just dropping the engine sump.

3. If you have had a check engine light warning then you need to have the vehicle scanned to see what fault codes have been generated by the computer. There will be some related to the intermittent loss of oil pressure but there may be others also..

4. You need to have the oil pressure problem checked out immediately. Running the engine when you constantly lose oil pressure intermittently will definitely cause engine damage due to a loss of both lubrication and oil cooling to critical components.

Oil pressure gauge drops to zero when car slows down, sometimes will go up when rpm reaches 2800, otherwise stays at zero, when shut off and turned on again pressure would be normal

Hi assuming the oil filter has not become blocked, it sounds like the oil pump is not working properly. Of course it could be something more simple like a faulty gauge, sender or bad connection. But assuming again that the engine is suffering from oil starvation, I would get it checked quickly before you seize the engine completely. Good luck!

My check gauges light is on, oil hands goes over to zero, moves up, light goes off, when it drops back to zero, gauge light comes back on.

Well the warning light is supposed to come on if any of the gauges display a dangerous condition, such as no oil pressure.
You may have a faulty sending unit for the gauge, or a wiring problem, or the engine may actually be loosing oil pressure when the gauge drops.
You could replace the sending unit as a test, or have someone check the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge.

Check gauges light is on oil pressure gauge not ready pressure 2003 dodge hemi truck

My 04 4.7 did that to me once, I shut the truck off, restarted and it sprung to life. I've heard of early in the life cycle pump failure. Turn the key to on but give it a second or two before cranking it, if it still reads no pressure shut down and go from there.

Gauges work fine when engine's started, then oil gauge falls below zero and warning light comes on saying "Check gauges," so I check the oil and transmission fluid levels and these are fine but...

start by checking the ground strap to the engine, and engine to body. The oil pressure sender unit may be bad. You may have to hook up an oil pressure gauge to the oil pressure sender port to verify proper oil pressure. Senders are cheap- I would just replace it and go from there.

Oil gauge drops all the way down and check gauge light comes on

Could be the oil pressure sender has gone bad or worse case scenario the oil pump has worn out. Check the oil presssure sender first, if it is leaking around it then that is the cause, if not then you may be looking at an oil pump. Just had a 03 ram 2500 doing the same thing and it was the sender, but that was a hemi and it had 230000 miles and a month later had to replace the oil pump for same issue.

Come to stop 99 Ram oil pressure drops to 0 check gauges light.

Change the oil! The 318Cu in V8 (5.2 liter) engine has a problem with sludge build up on the oil pump pickup tube screen. This engine requires oil changes at or before 3500 miles with a high detergent oil.
