Usually the odor will come from misfires. Check to see if you are getting enough spark to the plugs. ALso check the spark plugs. See if there is rust built up on the coils to that cylinder.
Had a similar issue with a 2003 ford taurus. Error codes of p305 misfire on cylinder 5 and first 1000 rotations. It did not smell like eggs. Rough/vibrating idle and lacking power at times.
Replaced spark plugs and wires. On the mine a 2003, I needed to remove the upper intake manifold, i believe it is called. Note not to pull out tubes on bottom when you life. This was to get at the rear spark plugs. 10mm 8mm 7mm and a flat head screw drive is all it took o and about 4 hours, im no mechanic : P I also used a splash of seafoam on the EGR valve and replaced the seal. I was impatient so i didnt soak it like I had read.
Anyways, turns out one of the spark plug wire boots had burnt. Also, 2 were severely corroded. This seems to be the solution, a basic tune up i guess.
Sounds like your wires are switched around. have replaced the plugs lately
Trouble Code Conditions:
Engine runtime 3 seconds, engine speed change under 1200 rpm, and the PCM detected a misfire condition present in one cylinder during the 200 (Catalyst) or 1000 revolution (Emission) test range.Note: If the misfire is severe, the MIL will flash on/off on the 1st trip!
Possible Causes:
2004 Marauder and 2003-2004 Mustang vehicles built before 12/19/2004 equipped with 4.6L 4V/5.4 4V engine may exhibit a runs rough, lacks power, and engine misfire, prompted by a MIL light and DTC codes P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0307, P0308, and P0316.
ACTION
Diagnose engine for engine misfire concern. If diagnostics determine an engine misfire which is characterized by leakage through exhaust valve(s), only replace the affected cylinder head(s).
SERVICE PROCEDURE FOR VEHICLES WITH RUNS ROUGH/MISFIRE CONDITION:
1. Perform relative compression check on all cylinders. If abnormal, check cylinder leakage and actual compression for "low" cylinders refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-00.
2. If leakage/compression check indicates a valve train concern, per valve train diagnostics in WSM, Section 303-00, replace cylinder head and cam assembly, pipe plugs and timing chain tensioner, per procedure outlined in WSM, Section 303-01.
3. If cylinder leakage and compression tests are inconclusive, perform misfire diagnostic, per TSB 05-22-8.
