'97 Ford Ranger-Please Help!

I have a '97 Ford Ranger- manual 5 speed. This morning while driving in 5th gear it started to kind of stall or sputter and seemed to be losing power and speed began reducing. Was acting like it would if it were running out of gas. The check engine light started flashing and it seemed like it was about to die. But I geared down to 4th and the check engine light stopped flashing, stopped stalling, and begin increasing speed. I thought at first maybe this was a sign of 5th gear being gone. However, it did the same thing in 4th. Not sure if correct, but maybe relating to speed. Seemed to do this going over 50mph. It never overheated or completely lost power. Are these apparent symptoms of a certain problem?

It could be the fuel pump, but that would act up no mater what gear your in. Usually when the check engine light starts flashing , that is caused by a cylinder misfire. Start by having your truck scanned, get the codes and go from there.

I have a 1988 ford ranger 2.3l 5speed or 4speed w/over drive. Since i got the truck i have not been able to get it in 5th gear wont even budge. Why?

Susan, either linkage is damaged, out of adjustment, 5th gear is damaged and gone or you have a 5 speed shift knob on a 4 speed transmission.

My ford ranger 4x4 5 spd. has started howling when I'm going down the road and it only stops when I either push in on the clutch or put it in neutral.

What speeds, does it make more noise in 4 wheel drive or the same. There are several possibilities, need more information. Does it howl in all the gears or in 5th gear only.

2003 Ranger Missing while driving. Stalling when idling

It sounds like a timing problem....First, have you had a tuneup lately? If not, parts may be corroded or burnt. The fuel filter may need to be changed...Next, the timing chain may need replacing...Check it out!

1994 ranger in 3rd and 5th gears, it has a loud whine to it.

Mine has a high pitched whistle at high rpms and I can't figure it out. But mines def not the tranny. I'm thinking it's a vacuum line somewhere. It's a 97 2.3l manual. The colder it is the louder...
