Cylinder # 5 is front of the engine drivers side, 2nd one in from the front of the car on the V8
Cylinder # 5 is front of the engine drivers side, middle one for the V6

Just have to figure out why the car has an occaisional miss, finally gat a hard code out of it the other day and that showed a mis on # 5. I ohmed out the coils on that side and they all read about the same .007. I'll try cleaning out the throttle body next and start to look at all of the connections.

  • Anonymous Oct 07, 2010

These coil packs do intermittantly fail, swop the #5 with another coil and see if the code changes. Also a dirty throttle body will not bring on a misfire code, but when you clean it, just wipe it with a clean rag, dont spray any cleaners in there.
Let me know how you do.

Jack up the front end of the car and go right underneath it, about dead center. Find the oil pan. Plug is located on back side, facing the tail end of the car. I believe it's a 15mm fitting.

I think the spark plug wires are crossed on a 1989 pontiac grand prix 2.8

The firing order is 1-2-3-4-5-6.
Looking at the engine facing the crankshaft pully the cylinders are 1-3-5 on the left bank (closest to firewall) and 2-4-6 on the right bank (closest to radiator) going from front to back. (passenger side to driver side)
From the front of the car looking at the coil packs you wires should go on 1-4-6-3-2-5 going from left to right. (passengerside to driver side)

Car won't stay running

The idle air control valve on your vehicle is located on the rear of the engine , dead center on top of the intake, directly behind the throttle body.

You'll also want to check out the TPS located on the right side ( while facing the engine ) of the throttle body mounted directly to the throttle body, as well as the MAP sensor located on the front right side( while facing the engine ) of the intake just to the right of the TPS. It looks like a little black box with a plug in the bottom.
