Hello, Code 1406 refers to the EGR Valve pintle position, If the wiring and connector is okay then you will need a new EGR Valve, It is located on side of engine on top near the fuel lines attached with two bolts has one electrical connector

1995 GMC Jimmy P0172, P0300, and P1406
Code 172 is for the fuel system being too rich on bank one.
Code 300 is for a random miss, and code 1406 is for a problem with the EGR valve or sensor.
Each component would need to be tested.

pintle position on EGR valve is incorrect if voltages are correct on EGR connector replace EGR valve if voltage readings are wrong at connector replace ECM both are found on ebay for under 75 bucks

P1406 is a EGR problem on the gm products, P1406 is a vent hose disconnect to the axle on the ford products. The PCM does not know where the EGR pintle is. This can cause poor running and bad idle. About the only thing that you can do is remove the EGR, clean it and carefully inspect the plug and connections on the valve its self. If that does not solve the problem then its time for a new one. Look at the wiring harness to the valve for crushed / cut wire also. It is possible to bench test the valve but it does require a good multimeter. Good luck and hope this helps. Use a carb cleaner to get the carbon out of the EGR valve.
