Trouble code 44 lean exhaust detected.

While setting in traffic the car sounds like it has a high lift cam in it.
it stumbles and sometimes stalls out. But hit the gas and runs great.
it smells rich to me

If smell rich but you have a lean code then most likelly the 02 sensor is not working good, also a stuck egr will give you that problem

Oxygen Sensor Error (Lean Condition Indicated) The ECM receives a signal from the O2 sensor based on the amount of oxygen in the exhaust. If there is excess oxygen in the exhaust, it is in lean condition and the O2 sensor voltage will be low. The ECM uses this information to adjust the amount of fuel delivered to each cylinder.

  • 44 - Oxygen sensor error (lean condition indicated)
  • On V-type engines with two O2 sensors, code 44 would indicate the left bank sensor is lean

1989 lesabre stumbles and dies

I agree it sounds like the magnet for the cam sensor, or a problem in the wiring harness.
I don't think the engine will run with the cam sensor disconnected since it needs that signal to set base timing. It can run without the crank sensor once the engine starts.
There is a slight chance the timing chain is getting loose and affecting cam timing too. You may be loosing plastic teeth on the cam gear.

Gm code reader says lean exhaust on

I dont know what kind of vehicle or motor but just a guess would be an Oxygen sensor, a code 44 emits lean exhaust detected,code 45 is rich exhaust detection... again i dont what kind of car so u may have a couple or more .

Cant Find a list of codes 1989 Buick Century. Car stalls and has a rough idle. coads are 31 43 and 44

Here is a code list for you. Remember this doesn't always mena a sensor issue, the problem can be in the wiring as well, or in the case of a lean code you may have an actual lean condition due to a vacuum leak at the intake or vacuum hoses or connections. I have highlighted your fault codes and added extra notes.

Firstly, congratulations to you on identifying the Trouble Code. This code relates to the Heated Oxygen Sensor (H02s)

The oxygen sensors supply the computer with a signal that indicates a rich or lean condition during engine operation (i.e. fuel/air metering).

This input information assists the computer in determining the proper air/fuel ratio. A low voltage signal from one or more sensors indicates too much oxygen in the exhaust (lean condition) and, conversely, a high voltage signal indicates too little oxygen in the exhaust (rich condition).

The oxygen sensors are threaded into the exhaust manifold and/or exhaust pipes on all vehicles.

A faulty oxygen sensor due to loose connections, bad grounds, high resistance in the circuit, or opens in the circuit can cause the following symptoms.
Related Symptoms
  • Surging at idle
  • Unstable idle
  • Running rough off idle
  • Hesitation
  • Stumble
  • Chuggle
  • Poor fuel economy
  • Spark knock
  • Stalling on acceleration
You must take EXTREME care when removing these sensors, as they can be difficult to remove (seize up). You may require a special tool to remove these without causing damage to the sensor.

Trouble code 33 &44

Code 33 is MAF sensor (mass airflow sensor ) & 44 is lean exhaust mixture. My guess is 33 is causing 44.

Car keeps dying

Trouble Code 33 and 34 are the MAF/MAP Sensor Circuit. It sounds like you've replaced that sensor already. Did you also have the code 34 before putting in the new sensor?
Or did this code start after it's replacement? Any other codes appearing?

Troubleshooting it would depend if it has the Speed Density Update. The dealer should be able to provide that info.
