1998 olds aurora need to locate shift release solinoid

If you have brake lights, that switch is OK. The shifter release solenoid is built into the shifter. The whole shifter has to be replaced. It could be the wiring. Usually not though. Most times t is that high dollar shifter.

My 2002 Aurora (4.0) makes an audible click when the key is turned, but nothing else. It could be the Starter relay, but I am not sure where that is located. It could also be the starter itself, but since...

The starter relay is located in the PDC (power distribution center) located under the hood with a removable lid (black box). Exactly how old is the battery and what is the battery voltage with the key off? Have you verified the battery connections, because this sounds as if it is a bad or corroded connection at the battery or starter itself. You can still have bright lights, but not enough ampere to get the starter to rotate.

Where is the starter located on a 1996 olds aurora

Unfortunately it's located under the intake manifold. But if you have some Machanical ability then it's really not that bad to replace.
