Do you mean PCM? Check the cable linkage going from the gas pedal through the firewall, to the throttle assembly. I've seen cars do this when the throttle assembly gets stuck on cruise control parts or in itself.

I would check for any codes, even if the check engine light is off. These Cars had a few different problems like this. The first is the Cam or Crank sensor failing. The second is the Timing belt jumping a tooth due to not replacing it at or around 60k. Ive seen this many times, With an advanced timing belt, it will run well, if not better than normal at cruising speeds but can cause stalling at low RPM, erratic idle, rough idle, lake of power from take off.

I need piston rings on my 01 Accent and was wondering what a job like this costs (ballpark of course) and if its something I can do on my own or would I need to take it in somewhere? Can you help me with...

This is definitely not an easy do-it-yourself project. This is about as difficult as it gets.

Just guessing, a shop would charge a coupla thousand $ -- maybe more. I could say with confidence that it's not a $500 job and it's not $5000 job.
