Hi there, I have a problem with my 1988 Audi 90. Sometimes all the electric windows will stop working temporarily. If I switch off the car for half an hour or so they seem to start working again. Bit of a hassle as you don't really want to leave your car unattended with the windows down. Any ideas?
I had the exact same problem. Under the drivers side dash you have to remove a panel, and there's some small fuseboxes and such. one of them controls your power windows. Take that one out, open it up, and re-solder any dodgy connections. I had to only re-solder one connection that had a very faint crack around the contact. Now my windows work 100% of the time.
Perhaps it is a problem for an auto electrician. 30 minutes is enough time for a built up charge to dissipate, The charge/short circuit it is causing is not enough to blow the fuse however, since it works after letting the charge clear.
There is no response at all? it doesn't go half way up then stop etc?
If that is the case, it would likely stem from a (slightly) faulty wire that loses shielding (the grounding around the wire) as it warms up.Possibly it flexes more as it gets warmer, and so the connection is weaker then.
Without seeing an auto-electrician to trace the wire, you could try replacing the fuse with a larger one (for example - a 10a fuse instead of a 5amp one).
NB: This can be dangerous, fuses are designed for safety and obviously it cuts out if there is an issue. A slightly higher fuse will prevent it cutting out as much unless there is a large voltage fluctuation (then it will still cut out).
Not recommended, but a possible temporary fix.

Thanks for your reply. No - it just stops works working completely after you use it a couple of times. Very strange!
Hi again,
Still having problems with the electric windows. Just been looking in the owners manual for information about fuses and it says that the fuse for the window will cut out and back in as necessary. Seems to be cutting out after about 10 minutes but not cutting back in until the car is cold. Maybe its my imagination but the problem seems to be worse on hot days rather than cold ones which doesn't help as there is no air-con! Any idea where I might locate the window automatic cut out?
