I had to replace the distributor on my 96 Chevy K1500. I was careful in marking location and getting the new distributor back in the same location. The new distributor location (timing) may/is off slightly though. I am getting a small, single "knock" at the initial acceleration. How can I set the correct timing? I can't seem to be able to find the timing scale on the crank pulley. How is the timing set on my truck, and what is it to be set at?

Bring cylinder number one piston to Top Dead Center (TDC) of compression stroke.

Remove the distributor cap bolts and discard.Remove the distributor cap.

Install a NEW distributor gasket onto the distributor.

Align the indent hole on the driven gear with the paint mark on the distributor housing.Ensure that the distributor rotor segment points to the cap hold area.

Align the slotted tang in the oil pump driveshaft with the distributor driveshaft. Rotate the oil pump driveshaft with a screwdriver if necessary.Align the flat (1) in the distributor housing toward the front of the engine.Install the distributor and distributor clamp.

Once the distributor is fully seated, align the distributor rotor segment with the number 8 pointer that is cast into the distributor base. If the distributor rotor segment does not come within a few degrees of the number 8 pointer, the gear mesh between the distributor and camshaft may be off a tooth or more. Repeat the procedure in order to achieve proper alignment.

Caution!Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
Install the distributor clamp bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the distributor clamp bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

if the fittings aren't different sizes to help you out, it will be the fitting furthest from the frame, closest to the rad. or engine. all gm trucks are like this.

SOURCE: i have a 96 chevy c1500 5.7 distributor problem

after installing distributor a camshaft offset check must be performed.this requires a scan tool.start engine with scan tool attached to diagnostic connector under dash,go to cam offset,it should show a value of 0 to -2 or +2.to adjust cam offset shut off engine, loosen dist. hold-down bolt, which should be 13mm bolt head.move dist slightly, start engine and rev to 1200 rpm and check scan tool to see updated cam offset value

Firing order 96 chevy cheyenne and how do you tell which is number one on distributor? Thanks :)

I've uploaded a diagram that gives you the firing order for the 96 Chevy Cheyenne. The best way to find out which is number one in the firing order is to following the spark plug on the engine block back to the distributor cap. Number 1 is on the right side, closest to the front of the engine. Best of luck!

92 chevy blazer 5.7 new I.C.M and coil sill no spark what do i check next

you may have a bad ign module located under the distributor cap or a bad pick up coil mounted on the bottom side of the distributor assembly this requires careful replacement as it is easy to cause the vehicle to become out of time you have to mark the location inside the distributor as well as mark the spindle

How to change distributor and rotor on 1995 chevy blazer

If you're talking about the distributor cap and rotor. I dont know what size engine you have, but it's pretty much the same. Mark your wires with a piece of tape and write a number on each one. When you remove the wire from the cap, ONE AT A TIME, mark that location on the OLD cap with the same number. (you can remove them and immediately put them on the new cap IN THE SAME LOCATION, but it can get in the way) After all the wires are off, take the two screws out of the base of the cap and lift up on it.

Now...Take the two caps and place them next to each other, and mark the new cap exactly as you did the old cap.

Leave them there for a minute. Go back and take the 2 screws out of the rotor. Place the new one in place and tighten, first making sure you have it in the right position. Look at the bottom. There should be a square prong, and a round prong. They're there to make sure you don't put it on backwards.

Go back and get the cap from where you left it and put it back on in the same position. Put the wires back on starting with the last one you took off and work your way back to number 1.

Don't be afraid to take a picture of it before you start. Just because.

96 Chevy Silverado Timing

the traditional way of setting your timing would be better, get a loan of a timing light, the sticker under your hood should tell you the spec. usually 10-12 degrees btdc at idle with the timing advance disconnected. the timing advance is a tan wire with a black stripe usually found behind a plastic relay cover on the upper passenger side of the firewall near the distributor. there will be 3 plastic nuts holding the cover. you can mark the harmonic balancer tdc with liquid paper so it is easier 2 see with the light.

Found TDC but rotor not on Cylinder #1?

when you bring the piston to TDC on the compression stroke
slide the distributor in and point the rotor towards the number one cylinder once you get it all back together but dont tighten the distributor down tight because you still have to adjust timing
