1998 GMC Safari SLX Van just died at the stop light and wont' start back up.Now it just spin,fuel pump is engaging hear it running when I turn the key on.checked the module,senseor in the distributor cap. Maybe it could be the coil,I've heard that sometimes when they get hot they will shut down altogether. May I need to invest into a OBDll Scanner real soon.

Why not test the coils?
And its handy to have a obd2 scanner saves some guess work

Check your spark plugs. That could be one of the reasons. Or are you sure you purchased the proper Fuel pump?

SOURCE: 2001 GMC Safari. Changed spark plugs, rotor cap

Try changing the fuel filter and checking the fuel pressure at the shredder valve. The readings should be 60 to 65psi with the fuel line pressurized with the engine not running, once the engine is running. It should drop by 5psi. Start with the simple things first. Keep me posted, be glad to help.

It's fairly common for the pickups in distributors to go bad.

If your not getting the MIL- engine light coming on and you can smell gas and you had the fuel pump replaced. I would sespect the electronic ignition module of being intermintent. It wouldn,t necessarily show as an engine code and would make it so the vehicle would run find one munite and not run the next The other thing you could check is the fuel filter however i can,t see a mechineic not changeing this with the fuel pump

Fuel pump in 2000 Safari AWD van starting to wine .Getting very loud in warmer outside temperatures.
Fuel pumps whine before they die. you will probly have to replace it , so save yourself the tow truck bill and do it before it stops completely

2000 GMC Safari AWD Suddenly won't start
I have a 2002 Safari with around 220k miles. I went out of town for several days and when I came back it would not start. I eventually got it started after about an hour. This happened again when I did not driver it for a week. This time I could not start the van. The fuel pump was spinning and it was getting gas. I took off the engine couling inside the van and inspected the rotor and cap. They were completely corroded. I put in an after market set for less than 30 bucks and the van started right up. I plan on getting the wires and plugs replaced but I don't think I want to do that myself due to tight access. Good luck.
