Just had 200,000 km service now 205. regularly serviced. 2 weeks ago noticed engine heat rising well over half way. pulled over standard procedure. Now 2 weeks later after nursing Suby have taken to mechanic for new thermostat. No change whatsoever. Heats up under strain ie. up hills & foot down. Only on long hills does it go almost into the red. Then on downhill or less accelerator needle goes back down to normal. On highway can't really go over 100kph without heat rising. My car has NEVER had anything go wrong with it 160000kms. So would appreciate muchly some advice.

Check the coolant temp sensor , fuses , relay and fan for operation if electric fans
if manual fan replace the viscous fan hub
have a pressure test done on cooling system to check for cracked tanks or other leaks
over 5 years old and never changed the water conditioner (antifreeze/boil concentrate ), consider replacing the radiator

SOURCE: Outback 1997 was overheating. Temperature

sounds like heater problem.not enough flow down to waterpump.
solution cut heater hoses and add to t junctions and join bypass so water flows through heater and through bypass straight to waterpump.

SOURCE: 1997 subaru over heats new radeator thermostat water pump

Hi,
Check to make sure the thermostat is installed the correct way around. It's easy to get it wrong.
Bulb part should face the engine block - while the spring should be on the radiator side.

For the price of a replacement - just fit a new one the right way around. Use a new gasket and a smear of blue Hymolar to seal it. Use coppergrease on the thin bolts and don't overtorque.

SOURCE: Strong odor of gasoline inside cabin

The is a short rubber hose in the the fuel line that connects to metal tubes on the driver side of the engine. When it is cold, the rubber shrinks, and if the clamps are loose, the fuel will leak from there. Tighten the clamps or replace the short hose with a hose that has some flex, a bit long, to accommodate the shrinkage movement.
Good luck with the dealer, because when the engine heats up the hose the fuel does not leak at all. This was a recall on WRXs but even with the same setup, Subaru denies there is an issue in the 2.5 fuel line layout.  My dealer told me to call a tow truck when it happens again, no matter where or when, and bring it in?!?!?!

Hi there
When you say overhauls ,well that depends on what you use it for/and do you mean engine overhauls or servicing,
Engine overhauls anything between 130.000 to 200,000 and serviceing every 10,000 km or 6000 miles depending on the type of oil and how many long runs you do per week.

Coming up on 200,000 Km. What service should I

That is about 120, 000 miles, if you have not done already, you should change the timimg belt and while you are doing that it is a good idea to replace the water pump. You could change your transmission oil but not critical.
