Your model has a timing belt Part cost about $50 depending on the a store. Check it out by looking at TOP DEAD CENTER marks from camshaft and Crankshaft with the position of Piston # 1 at the top while both exhaust and intake valve are closed. When it is bad, timing is out of sequence causing this problem. Good luck.

Check the speed (RPM) sensor located behind the engine center mounted into the transmission bell housing. these do go bad and will cause a no start by not sending a signal to the distributor.

Volvo 1984 StnWagon Dl turns over but dies when taking off the ga

NO Diesel engines dont have spark plugs so dont worry about it as the ones you have should be ok BUT first check the length of the plug thread to the ones you took out, are they the same as they have to be the correct length and not any diffreance also the earth tip on the end
If they look the same 100% your ok to go. RON

1988 Volvo 240 DL won't start B230F

I had more or less the same problem. It would only happen when the engine was cold. According to the mechanic, the fuel pump was going bad. After replacing it, I havent had it happen to me again, granted its only been a couple of days since I changed it.

The 1990 240 volvo isn't getting any spark.

If you are sure about spark----there is an inline fuse on left front fender in engine compartment. If this is not it then get the Bently manual from IPDUSA.COM

Volvo 240 has no spark

Try a new engine rpm speed sensor. It is located at the back-top of engine block where it mates to trans. You will need to remove a single bolt (10mm socket or wrench). You may have to wiggle the sensor to lift it out. Another symtom you may experience, is when you are cranking the car to start, it will buck and act like it is out of time. Another possible component is the ignition power stage/amplifier.
