It's going into limp mode ,electronic problems . A cog with an exclamation mark inside indicates a malfunction with the powertrain, a sensor or software fault. A malfunction with the powertrain may see the vehicle lose a certain amount of power, but will continue to run ,maybe.Has anyone hooked up a scan tool an checked for DTC' S - diagnostic trouble codes or is the mechanic you refer to guessing . Could be a fault with VVT - Variable Valve Timing ,sticking cam phaser . Without knowing codes stored we'd only be guessing .

Kai Rio built sept 07.Suspect fuel pump fault.Car randomly cut out when driving & won't immediately restart, leave a few hrs & restarts & drives ok again. Any engine fault codes for fuel on this car?

Generally this kind of problem is caused by a faulty electronic component getting heat soaked. Best bet is to run your diagnostics while the car is still warm and won't start. If you wait for it to cool down (when it starts), the problem will not present itself. If it's not trying to start at all, it's usually the ignition module. If it runs rough, it's usually one of the coils.

My van has been revving up and down for 2 days and would cut off while driving and now wont start.

The first thing you need to do is run a fault code test through the diagnostic connector under the dash.

1998 Deville was drove to work came out it wouldn't start replaced the battery. Now it turns over but wont start. Any suggestions?

auto right? there is a neutral/park relay on automatic transmission equipped cars. if it is broken or loose it wont let you to run engine (like you did not place the shifter to N or P position)

also for some US made cars you need to press brake pedal to start car, there is a switch for that you need to find its location on your car.

least possible option. your immobilizer is problematic. it can unlock doors but wont allow it to run engine.

There must have been a 'Check Engine' Light? When a 'check engine light' (MIL=Malfunction Indicator Lamp) is turned on, there is a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) set/stored in the ECM/PCM (Engine Control Module/Powertrain Control Module). This code identifies which engine management system component/function experienced a malfunction. Once you pull/read this code, you may begin diagnosis. You'll need an OBDII (On-Board Diagnostics II) code reader. You should find a P07?? number stored (P07??... is a transmission code).

The Engine Control Module (ECM) and Transmission Control Module (TCM) can only be accessed using diagnostic equipment (e.g.: VAS, VAG-COM, Bosch KTS, Texa, ...) connected to the data link connector of the car, in order to pull out all DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) memored. Then you will be full informed about pieces out of order, and you will be able to repair damages & replace bad pieces. Therefore you will can erase all faults memored, and reset ECM & TCM. Finally you will start the engine and test the car. If you will send me the engine type, I will can send you back the fuel pump fuse & relay positions, for cheking them, and also all supplementary informations that you need.

The car wont start sometimes and sometimes it will. The engine doesn't even turn over but it's not a battery problem because we had that checked. What could it be?

Dear Madam or Sir,

this is a well known problem with the immobilizer system.

See the following official tech bulletin :

Affected vehicles:
All models with Bosch RB8 instrument panel up to 2002 MY.

Problem:

Engine starts and cuts out immediately.

Trouble code stored: 17978 (P1570) - engine control module (ECM), immobilizer active.

Trouble code stored: 18058 (P1650) - CAN data bus, instrumentation - no signal.

Cause
Immobilizer fault.
System arms when ignition switched ON.

Remedy:
Access fault memory. If trouble codes present fit modified instrument panel (incorporating immobilizer control module).

Note: Immobilizer can only be programmed using diagnostic equipment.

Audi a4 throttle control unit

immobilizer not recognizing key. vehicle will start and cut out immediately. try unplugging instrument cluster and recconecting as they sometimes develope a bad connection due to connector pins being very fine. check connection between ignition barrel and dash cluster. immobilizer built into cluster. if engine control unit has been changed immobilizer won't recognise it, must be adapted using diagnostic reader. this is done by entering instruments [code 17] select adaption [code 10] and channel 00 [erase learned values] and confirm. keys may need to be adapted to immobilizer [only at dealer as key code is needed.
