Brake light switch? ground to the brake light assembly? were the sockets melted at all? sometimes they will deform from heat- you can usually pry the contacts out a bit to make contact with the light bulb. A cheap 12V tester will tell you if power is getting to the light socket
Then the problem is most likely either a faulty brake light switch located on the brake pedal lever assembly under the dash or a broken wire at the brake light switch wire connector, or the turn-signal switch is faulty. If you can remove the wire connector from the brake light switch and jumper the wires and the brake lights come on then the switch is faulty, and sometimes if you step on the brake pedal and wiggle around the turn-signal switch the brake lights might flash or come on indicating a faulty turn-signal switch, however that is not always the case. Here is an image of the brake light switch to help assist you, and let me know if you require any further assistance.
My brake lights will not come on when the brake applied, I checked all bulbs and fuses and they are good. I went to Auto Zone and bought a new brake light switch, I took the old one out, disconnected it and plug the new one in but I am unable to find the place where it came from to put it in place, I still don't have any brake lights!
My question is: Does the switch must be in its proper housing before the lights work, or should they work with it just hanging? I have it plugged up but it is not in the housing because I can't find the place where the old one came from!

It could be the relay, which is a yellow box located under the carpeting in the trunk on the left side. It is a problem common to your model. Also, check the brake switch's (behind the brake pedal) functionality (12V present with key at ACC or ON and continuity between wires when button engaged).
i hope this helps

SOURCE: brake lights won't work. tail lights do. I
need to know if your third brake light up high is working or not.if it isn't,you need to check the brake light switch on the brake pedal with a test light, one side hot all the time, the other side should turn hot when brake pedal is pushed.
