Adjust timing on 1998 GMC K2500 pick up 5.7 liter

Long story short, it just keeps turning over but will not start. I put in a new gas tank, fuel pump, changed plugs/wires/cap and rotor. I know the engines getting gas, spark and air so why won't it start?

The problem is it won't start - I cannot check it at any rpm. Same deal I have gas & spark, but will not even fire.

most all of the timming can be done with disconnecting the brown advance connector,,, mine is under the glove box,,, some are in the glove box... this quick disconnect is the timming advance for 5.7 engines and can solve the problem with timming settings.... once disconnected the timming will not advance from the computer and you can set the timming accordingly,,, once the timming is set and the connection is back then when the engine warms up you should see 14-degrees before TDC,,,, easy to do once you find that brown wire connector,,, some repair manuals give it a different color.

as for not starting,,,, the ignition key that supply's voltage to the distribitor,,, may be the problem,,, i have seen the ignition switch not work correctly causing this problem.... if you supply 12v from the battery to the distribitor and get a spark,,, one of 2 things,,, the switch or the computer box is fried..

It has to be done with a scanner. You can adjust this distributor, but there are no timing marks to watch as you move it. There is a timing mark on the balancer and on the timing cover for referencing Top Dead Center #1 cylinder only, but it is only used for dropping the distributor in to get the engine up and running. A scanner is needed to properly adjust the timing. Connect the scanner and look for a data parameter labeled ‘cam offset’ or possibly ‘cam ******.’ It will be listed in degrees. Start the engine, and bring it up to 1500 rpm. Note the reading. If the timing specification is not within plus or minus two degrees of zero, you need to move the distributor. You can move the distributor with the engine running but the timing will not change. After you move the distributor, the ignition has to be cycled off to let the computer learn the new timing spec. Restart the engine, bring it up to 1500 rpm and see what the new spec is. You must repeat this procedure until you get the timing into the specification as mentioned above. Once you have it set to spec, the code should clear.

How do I jump a fuel pump relay of a 1988 GMC K2500 with a 5.7L to get power to a sending unit from a 1998 GMC C1500 with a 5.0L V8?

Not sure that we are thinking of the same thing. The wires to the gas tank operate the fuel pump and the fuel gauge. The relay is used to send power to the pump and you should not have to do anything to it to get power down the wire to the pump. When you turn on the key, the relay closes and power goes to the in tank fuel pump.

Check to see if fuel is getting to the filter. Maybe too much dirt in lines & plugged filter? If fuel at filter, put hose in place of filter JUST LONG enough to see if fuel is getting to fuel rail.

After adjusting valves due to replacement of #8 exahust valve moter won't start it tries to poof but thats it , so i kept at it trying to start it and it started up but shook preetty bad are my valves too...

Sounds like the timing went out. You will need to re-adjust it. Its very common when removing the overhead cam to mess up the timing if it was not put back in place in the exact position needed. Get a timing light, or rent one and a book to see how to reset the timing.

Recheck the wires coming from the starter, for rub-thru, and grounding. Commonly a wire gets pinched between the starter and the starter housing. Wiring touching or near the exhaust manifold can melt, check there too :)

If I have less than 1/4 tank of gas my yukon won't start.

I had the same problem. I had a few different mechanics tell me that the fuel pump is starting to go out when it does that. The fuel pump is located in the fuel tank, and the gasoline keeps the pump cool and lubricated. When the fuel tank is less than a 1/4 full, the pump is not submerged anymore, and can have trouble sending gas to the engine. My emergency fix was to get underneath the car on the driver's side and bang on the gas tank about three times. It will start up, and will run great unless you turn your engine off. But eventually you're going to need a new fuel pump. Once I replaced it, the problem went away.

1998 gmc suberban ran out of gas and cant start it??? i put gas i

It's never a good thing to let Fuel Injection run out of Gas. The Fuel pump runs on Low Voltage and has a Hard time Restarting. Could also have had some (Gunk) at the bottom of the Tank that got into the Fuel System. Keep tryin to start Her for a while and see if the Pump won;t pick up. Also got a Long way for the Fuel to go to the Motor in that Suburban! Let me Know!

Still will not eve start now. I had it tuned up 2 months ago new plugs rotor, cap, etc. put in a new fuel filter made sure it is on proper checked all connections for leaks. this cannot be a fuel pump problem now. no problem with the elctrical i figure i have great spark on ignition tester. I can hear the fuel pump prime when i turn the key. but when i went and checked the fuel port i had no pressure. When it is being cranked gas sews out of the test port. Also i dont if this is comon cause i used to turn my keyand go. but when i have someone turn the key and i listen at the gas tank whn the key is shut off i hear gs spraying back into the gas tank. So i am open for opinions.
