Dodge Ram B250 1994 - has a Starting Problem

My Dodge is my baby. I've had this van for about 1 year now. 150,000 miles, 3.9 engine and purrs like a kitten all regular maintenance was kept up great. Nothing leaks, check engine light never comes on. Totally reliable I have one problem that just started that i am not farmiliar with. Van may start perfect 10 times straight. On the 11th start nothing, no power no click, no sound, nothing. If i hold the key in the start position or turn it a few times then it will start. Battery is fine, Altinator, belt & pulley have already been replaced about 6 months ago. check engine light is NOT on. So what chould it be?

If you van has a security system in it, it could be causing this problem. they usually disable the starter circuit. Paul has listed good places to start. but if they don't fix it do this: when your trying to start but its not working have some one check voltage at the starter. there are 3 points to check 1: where battery cable connects 2: where starter connects to solenoid 3: small wire that operates solenoid. if there is voltage at all three point replace starter it has a shorted / open spot on armature. voltage at 1 and 3 but not 2 replace solenoid. voltage at 1 but not at 3 and you have already checked the items Paul identified check wiring between neutral safety switch and solenoid.

Could be that your automatic gearbox is not well placed in "p"
So you should just pus the lever up a little more

The newness of your van is starting to wear off. The headlight switch has probably seen about as many off-on cycles as it was designed for. Time for a new switch.

You should never buy any van type vehicle, in the first place,
the transaxle will fail any day.
I used to own a trans repair shop

Other then sell it,I would,I won't ride in one, not safe

Your correct, you should go 5000 miles and maybe use a 1/2 qt,
on most vehicles, none.

So you do a cylinder leak down test
Check Emission Gas Readings,to see what that shows
I suspect a broken oil ring, scored cylinder, broken piston
skirt or serious cylinder head issues.

Never go to a dealer. Calling or Visiting is okey

What automatic transmission is in a 1994 dodge van

Hi again,

Dodge RAM 3spd auto transmissions (RWD) available for the 3.9L engine were:

  • 3-Speed: A500 (42RH)
  • 3-Speed: A727 (36RH), Sportsman Model

  • If you can't find your model code on the transmission casing, the vehicle build plate (in the engine bay) should have the factory drivetrain code stamped on it.

Failing this, Chrysler/Dodge should have your transmission details on their database.

If you end up replacing the entire transmission, you might as well upgrade to the improved 4-speed. Most Chrysler/Dodge RAM transmissions were a universal fit, but some had stronger internal components to withstand the higher torque of the larger capacity engines.

I've located a link which has more technical detail on the transmission:

What is the recommended service for 2004 chevy

Service your cooling system every 5 years or 150,000 miles. The GM Dex Cool has a life of 5 years or 150,000 miles which ever comes first. Replace the thermostat also and buy the fail safe thermostat, it cost a bit more but worth it.

Service the engine (spark plugs and wire) every 100,000 miles or till engine management prompt attention. (service engine light DTC code)

Service the transmission every 3 years or 60,000 miles, replace the transmission oil and filter. Transfer case fluid and differential fluid.

Service the engine oil and filter every 6 months or 3,000 miles. Lube Chassis

Service the air filter and cabin air filter, wiper blades every 15,000 miles or once a year.

1995 dodge van falls down when the fuel tank gets to 1/4 of fuel

sounds like a possible pluged fuel filter or a tired fuel pump. the pump is cooled by the gas. so if you work it at 1/4 tank or below it tends to get hot. but towing may make it hot anyway. check fuel pressure and the replace the fuel filter
