I have a E40d transmission on my 1992 Ford f-350 diesel. The transmission is shifting hard, just replaced torque converter last year. Does the tranmission have a sensor or solenoid that could effect this. I have 155,000 miles on truck. Could filter be problem. Could you tell me where any of these electrical sensors might be located if all possibly they might be the problem.

SOURCE: Trouble code P1740 on 1999 Dodge Ram 2500

I had the same code on my 2001 dodge 2500. The truck wouldn't shift from 3-4. I pulled the trans pan off and replaced a broken spring ($2.00). It is behind a thin plate with 3-4 small torq screws. You don't have to remove the valvebody. Only took me 45 minutes to fix.

I would like to give thanks to Jeff Russel from Teal automotive. He said this is a very common problem. He sells any part for any automatic Transmision and his prices are very affordable.

SOURCE: can my torque converter sensor cause my transmission not to shift

I think it can and I remember problems with the PCM in the transmission controls had recalls. First check your fluid levels and see if it is low. You may get lucky to just add fluid. You may be better off running your VIN# to see if there were recalls on your car at the dealer. Best of Luck.

1992 F-150 4x4 E40D Trans. How to adjust? It has a neutral start switch (Haynes says this switch is for "C" series obk

E40D (no engine told) wiring is not the same on all. it is fully electronic controls.
the PRNDL is odd , it has resistor bank there that allows 1 wire
aka gear selector switch range switch TRS ,P/N , but is PRNDL.

to trans to let TCM know what gear you want.
TCM is >>> , EEG
2 shift solenoids. 2 for clutch, and pressure control too.

The EEG , sets main line pressure in the box. if this fails , it can shift harshly.
does autoshift al gears? or not.
never read Haynes/chiltion rags,. I use them for door stops
then take 10- years of cars and mix all that up in to a toxic soup of waste. avoid it like the plague. it is, use real shop manuals from
ford only or only line here.
https://eautorepair.net/Marketing/Default.asp

testing the range switch is first.
PRNDL , it is prime inputs.
if wrong all fails.
harsh shifting , can be the transmission accumulator bad.
a kind shift shock absorber it is.
or the EPCS bad, the TCM modulates this to use the correct line pressure for every gear, in fact all these PRNDL
is reverse harsh or PRND shift to driver harsh?
the service manual by ford, for E40D , covers all line pressure test to prove EPCS is messing up.
EPC solenoid, electronic pressure controls

Article 96-26-21 is being republished in its entirety as part of a consolidated 7.3L diagnostic aid booklet.
ISSUE
Some vehicles with transmissions built prior to 11/13/95 (5L13) may exhibit a driveline resonance/vibration between 1400 and 2000 RPM with the torque convertor engaged. This may be caused by the torque converter.
ACTION
Prior to torque converter replacement, refer to the following Service Procedure for details to verify conditions.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Verify the resonance/vibration does not occur in neutral and is most noticeable between 1400 and 2000 RPM with the converter clutch engaged during medium to heavy throttle conditions. Also watch for the vibration to diminish at engine speeds lower than 1400 and higher than 2000 RPM. If the concern meets all of these conditions and the transmission has a built date prior to 11/13/95 (5L13), replace the torque converter. Refer to the appropriate Service Manual for removal and installation procedures.
2. If the vibration concerns do not meet the conditions, check for non-factory installed items that could affect driveline and verify proper installation. Also refer to the appropriate Service Manual, Section 05-00 for diagnosis and testing.
