You might have an actuator out, some of those have a shifter, but a solenoid still has to be actuated

I have a 98 gmc jimmy the 4x4 is not working it has the push button on the dash and when you put it in 4x4 the lights work but it dont go into 4x4

Sounds like the transfer case motor is going out or bad, i know the trucks have a 4x4 engagement motor on the front differential which engages the front axles. i am not sure how yours is setup, you will have one or the other.

1994 jimmy push button 4x4 wont engage

Could be the servo on the front diff not activating. Could be a power prob or failed unit.

The 4-wheel drive on our 2001 GMC Jimmy does not seem to engage. It is new to us and came with no manuals. Are we doing something wrong or is it just not working?

First and foremost can you tell me if the lights are showing up on the 4x4 selector switch ? Second if they are illuminated ( should be in 2-Hi ) when you select to go into 4-Hi or 4-Low does the selection flash? And Lastly can you hear a sound of any type (clicking, ticking, thumping) when you push the button?

The 4x4 actuator located on the front axel/tranny transfer case is probably faulty. Make sure the electrical connector that goes to it isn't damaged. Should be a easy fix.
