I have had no problems w/ my 98 jetta until today... the check engine light was flashing and the car kept stalling out. It seems to run ok right now, but the light is still on (steadily) and sometimes the engie will idle down like it is going to stall. what could the problem be. I am used to ford problems not volkswagon. please help!
My check engine light started flashing and the car seems to be ideling like it is going to stall. When you press on the gas, the car seems to have no power. Basically we have a very similar problem our 98 jetta was fine. Normally the temperaure line was nearly always on, although mechanics indicated it was just faulty. But recently noew the check engine linght comes on and off for hours straight, then the car has died, and when we try to restart it turns over, but doesn't catch. 15 minutes later the car starts, and the check engine light will sometimes be on or sometimes be off.

One possible cause: many cars use the engine coolant temperature sensor to control idle speed and to shut down a dangerously overheated engine. if this sensor is sending a false signal, the controller will not know that and it will continue to listen to it. your task is to try and see if this signal is true or false. do this by measuring (USING A HAND-HELD MULTIMETER SET TO LOW OHMS RESISTANCE TEST) the resistance change across this sensor identified by a blue/white or yellow/red wire at one connector and a brown/green wire at the other connector. the sensor is located near the thermostat on the hot side of the coolant outlet from engine. if you find no change in ohms or find infinity ohms or always zero ohms, change the sensor and the light may fix itslef over time.

You have a lot to check. Start by scanning the engine codes. There's good chance it will tell you where to look next.
The symptoms sound like fuel delivery (assuming the engine runs well when it runs). Put a fuel pressure gage on the car and verify that you are getting a constant and good pressure. Could be fuel pump, blocked lines, bad fuel regulator, or an intermittent electrical problem. I had a situation like this where the car would run fine and then just cutout or not start. Turned out to be a loose connection to the fuel pump. Easy fix. Very hard to find.
These models have a control module on the right front fender which had problems with the connections. Have someone crank the engine while you wiggle the harness. If starting comes and goes, Volvo sells the repair kit for this. Let me know if you need further assistance.
your battery or you alternator is not performing properly depriving the engines ignition system of the volage necessary to keep the engine running. the EPC light came on because raw fuel was sensed by the o2 sensors
