My 2002 montero was smoking really bad (white smoke) it smelled like burning plastic. I took it home and let it sit for 1/2 hour. I started it and the smoke faded away, but when i accelerate to take off it smokes a little bit. there is no smell to the smoke its just white.

not the Japan Hydrogen version right, it burns Petrol (gasoline)

well, it needs service, clear as day,
we can't really guess, all problems with ,Wankel spark or fueling
but guess bad fuel. or leaking fuel or worse bad engine,

smog is black or white, if white is smoke smells like burning oil
slow to dissipated, or fast like steam as in Antifreeze nasty sweet smell in the air, ????
be more clear no smoke. where and smell and color

If the smoke is a bluish white you have worn valve seals.

Is the smoke white, blue, or black?

You have damaged the engine, the smoke is from burning coolant in the engine due to a blown leaking cylinder head gasket or gaskets. Do not drive this or you will completely destroy the engine.

try a new spark plug e and then if wires to spark plug , replace that too. and cap and rotor if it has that....?????



then when spark is good, check compression with any $20 gauge.

smoke has 3 colors, (my rules not ASE)

1 black fuel (flooding etc) can seem gray but is black .

2: white and lingers., oil burning , bad. news.

3: white and fades fast, is STEAM, like moms tea pot, look next time..

smell white smoke, smells sweet, its toxic antifreeze.

smells like oil dripped on an hot exhaust? that is the smell of oil burning

it will be burnt wire and around the ignition switch
burnt wires are obvious but be smart
only an accredited auto electrician should be used to locate the wire/s so don't let your boyfriend start or it will cost more in the long term and will still not be fixed

"Hug" white smoke sounds bad. The dealer sold you a lemon. Burning oil is blue/black meaning bad pistons rings or valves. White smoke could be coolant leaking into the cylinders through a cracked head and/or head gasket.
Check you local laws concerning your warranty for used cars and try to return it to the dealer/scammer.

IF SMOKE IS WHITE AND A SWEET SMELL TO IT YOUR BURNING COOLANT
MAY BE HEAD GASKET

Blue smoke is oil and means you have internal engine damage.
White smoke with a sweet smell means you have a blown head gasket (check antifreeze, if it's low that is another sign)
White smoke with no real smell is water in the gas tank. Grab some water remover.
Black smoke is a sign your burning to much gas, you need a tune up.

white smoke is coolant. could be cracked cylinder block or head gasket rotted. good luck

blue smoke is oil.
nest time try and smell the white smoke see if it smells sweet?
if it does its antifreeze.
and also black smoke is fuel (like a leaky injector )
