I have just had a mobile tow bar fitting guy fit a tow bar on my 406, when i hook up to my newly acquire caravan (not new), the side lights dont work and when i press the footbrake it seems the side lights flash instead of the brake lights as the small white lights on the front of the caravan flash with the brake. How can i work out the colour code system on the rear light cluster of my 406 diesel estate to make sure the correct wires from the tow bar are connected.. the fitter lives a long way from me and insists he has done it correctly... I have check wiring on caravan plug against the code of the new plus i fitted and its correct... could you let me know which colour wire from tow bar does to corresponding colour on rear cluster of the estate... thank you, mike

Much better to go to a place like Hitch City and have them fix it. When you buy the tow bar for the vehicle, the mounting points are under the holes in the tow bar. Drill the holes, spray with bitumen underseal spray, add washers and bolts. Find someway to mark dead centre of the vehicle as that is where the centre of the hitch has to be. I hope you aren't towing a 40 foot twin axle boat trailer and boat, or even a full size caravan / camp trailer with that little vehicle!
provided that the caravan is not over 3 tons and is fitted with electric brakes there will not be a problem
there is a load limit on the tow ball of around 150 kgs but if you use stabilizer bars ( which you should be using) , that makes it legal as the lift provided when you adjust the bars takes the load off the ball and makes the van more stable on the road
there will be a decal on one of the front door openings with the max towing load allowed
if you want to fit the tow bar your self you should be aware that by fitting a tow bar it is a modification to the vehicle and requires a certified plate attached to the vehicle to cover insurance requirements and road worthy inspections
next most purpose built tow bars sold by auto shops will pick up existing holes in the sub frame mand you can get a harness that piggy backs onto lights on one side for the trailer
Best talk with a tow bar retailer/ fitter as they can certify the bar and the fitment and have a harness in stock
Check with a tow bar fitting shop as there will be a loom that is available for this. You will remove the socket to a light assembly and fit the new loom to the light assembly . then plug the car loom into the new wiring loom and it is all set to go . IF doubtful pay a small bit and have the shop do it for you
The transmission was over heating. Have a pressure test done on the transmission as it may have been just good enough for normal driving but not for towing. Did you have the over ride brake on the van released and were the electric brakes releasing. You can fit an external oil cooler to help with the problem as most autos suffer over heat problems when towing.
of course it can with a bit of welding and cutting ,but the official answer is no as it can only be used on the vehicle it was designed for so this new vehicle must be taken to a authorised tow bar fitting workshop and have the correct towing hitch fitted which conforms to europeon regulations ,then once its fitted the relavent paperowrk purporting to the towbar plus the tax paid reciept from the garage taken to the nearest vehicle test station and duely tested as part of a complete new yearly inspection then the paperwork is changed to show the towing bar and new certificate of inspection .Failure tom comply will render the owner liable to a big fine
has your car got a bulb failure warning for rear lamps.?if so you will need a relay module to connect the wiring to the rear light clusters to the 7pin trailer connector if not its easy just connect the wirng from the bar to the rear lamps yellow to lh indicator green to rh indicator white to ground red to stop lights black to lh tail lamp brown to rh tail lamp blue to rear fog you may need to uprate the relevant fuses in the vehicle fusebox if you have a 7s aux socket then thats needs wiring to fit in with what you are towing cos there could be a differance as to how its wired but its norm is for a fridge interior lighting battery charging in a caravan etc.
most vehicles don't come with a plug as new,if it is a used vehicle & has a tow bar there should be a plug otherwise you will have to fit one yourself or have one fitted for you.....hope this helps......cheers.
