I have an 05 Mazda 6 i , I am having a problem with it not turning over. It sputters, but if I tap on the gas tank it will turn over. At first the engine light was not on but after a few times of driving it, it came on so I took it for a diagnostic test and it read p2187. After that the engine light went off but later that day it did it again. I was told it could be the fuel pump, then I was told it could be the air/fuel intake valve(or something like that) then I was told it could just be the fuel filter. Not sure what to do.

the pump is not priming. I know its too late now, but think of the 1/2 tank as the empty and fill up then, is how the cops do it. The fuel is not going to the engine. This means that either the fuel pump is bad, clogged, or a filter is clogged. it wont be helpful here but you have to follow the fuel line to the engine disconnect it and see if it will push the gas through. if it doesn't come through then back trace it to the tank. if there is a filter then it could have picked up the particles in the bottom of the tank and clogged it. Filters come in different ways the most common replaceable ones are either shiny silver or some can be clear. Fuel filter for the chevy uplander one of our other Fixya people has the above to say about the one in the tank.

had a similar problem with older car. turned out it was my gas tank was not letting in air to replace the gas i was using as i drove. if you loosen gas cap and problem is solved, search for blocked fuel return line to the tank.
repair/replace gas tank if it is seriously 'caved in'.
The float sending unit is messed up and don't know now much gas is in the tank. The float may be stuck in a higher position showing more gas, in reality the gas level is way below. Try using a rubber mallet and tap on the gas tank near the fuel pump. It may help free up the float.
Disconnecct battery. flip fuel pressure switch in trunk, raise car disconnect fuel lines, disconnect fuel pump level sending electrical unit, using a brass ppunch tap lock ring counteerclock wise until loose, remove unit from tank, would highly recommend you remove all the gas from the tank, bwefore atempting this. Good luck.
change plugs wires also .fill gas tank up put prestone or gum out fuel injector cleaner.drive car around several miles.give injector cleaner time to clean out injectors.wait until engine cool .change fuel filter.relief fuel pressure before changing fuel filter.
On my 2003 Mazda 6S the problem was a loose gas cap which caused the check engine light to come on and stay on. To turn the light off you have to disconnect the battery for a couple of minutes.
