If you have an extended warranty that requires a certain schedule, follow that. Otherwise, per the testing that Consumer Reports did a few years ago, six months/6000 miles is fine. Shops want you to come in at three months/3000 miles, but based on long-term (60000 miles) wear testing that they did on multiple cars (NYC cabs), there was no difference in wear between 3000 mile and 6000 mile intervals.

Can engine sludge be repaired, or do I need a new car?

Hi Alan:
Engine sludge is a condition as opposed to something that is broken. It is an accumulation of dirt and oil on the inner surfaces of the engine that typically happens when non detergent oil has been used and not regularly changed.

Putting high detergent oil in a sludged up engine will release all kinds of gritty contamination onto the oil, and can really mess up your engine in a hurry UNLESS you change the oil right away. That way the inside of the engine gets cleaned up, and the dirty oiol gets removed so you don't have all the nasty stuff wearing out the moving parts.

When do you change the transmission fluid on a 2004 toyota avalon?

I would recommend at least once a year, that way if there are any leaks in the trans they will be picked up before they turn serious.

better safe than sorry.

What is mileage to replace a timing belt on a 2004 Avalon

Typically any timing belt replacement interval is 60k-75k miles. The book will however tell you 90k. Now it depends on what engine your Avalon came with. The 3.0 is a non interference engine meaning if it does snap, it will not cause any damage to your engine. The 3.5L engine however i dont know if its a interference engine or not but i dont see anywhere where it says it is. As always suggested, change your water pump as well, as it runs off the timing belt. Once i didnt change the water pump and a week later it locked up on me and ruined my perfect new timing belt. Truth be told :) lol
