It's normal for a thin white smoke to come out of the exhaust at initial start up. This is caused from moisture built up in the exhaust burning off. However if there is a continuous flow of thick white smoke it could be a blown head gasket causing coolant to burn.

if its a head gasket, is it normal for the white smoke to smell like strong fumes? does it make the check engine warning ligth lit up in the panel?

  • Anonymous Sep 06, 2010

If it were a head gasket the smoke would likely smell like maple syrup, the smell of burning coolant. It wouldn't necessarily make the check engine light go on but it could foul the oxygen sensor and cause it to set a code.

I have a 200 kia sportage it wouldnt start so i got a jump and it started but there was white smoke coming from my muffler it stopped but my radiator was bad so i replaced it was running ok , then the next...

Sounds like you are getting coolant inside the cumbustion chambers in the engine. possible blown head gasket, or cracked head. get it checked by a pro. this could be very costly, but messing with it could cause more damage, such as bent connecting rods from trying to compress liquid coolant. good luck.

White smoke coming from the muffler, loud noise...

One potential cause is too much gas. It may be running "rich". Your car may also be burning a little oil. White smoke is water or antifreeze. If you are loosing coolant from the radiator, it's probably a blown head gasket. If not, it is just condensation in the exhaust pipe that is evaporating as the pipes heat up. If the car is running too rich, the unburned gas will cause black smoke and burning oil smoke will be blue.

Hope helps (remember rated this).

Changed spark plugs in 97 buick lasabre and now it cranks and runs, but white smoke coming out. Is that blown head gaskets? Does it have anything to do with the fuel pump my mechanic put on 3 weeks ago???

You need to check the oil with the dipstick (wipe in down a few times) to see if it looks like a chockalate milk shake. If coolent has made its way into the oil you have blown head gasket. The fuel pump which is usually in the gas tank in most gm vehicles would not cause white smoke, if it failed you car would not start because your engine would not get any gas to the injectors
