If it only overheats while stopped or when driving slowly then check to see if your radiator fan is coming on. If not check the radiator fan fuse, temperature switch, relay, and the fan motor itself.
If it is consuming radiator coolant or is blowing steam out of the tailpipe then consider a blown head gasket as your problem. The engine oil may or may not look milky in color if the head gasket is leaking.
did you install the thermostat pointing in the correct direction? Is the radiator cap in good shape? Check for correct coolant level. The radiator will continue to draw in coolant from the reservior for many heat cool cycles after it has been opened.
And lastly could the temp gauge be reading high? Possible temperature sensor.
