I have a 1999 volvo v70 and there are 3 lights on: brakes (we replaced), ABS and check engine. The speedometer and odometer are not working. What is the problem, bad ABS or just a sensor?

ABS Module

to make sure, you would have to have the vehicle scanned with Volvos' Vida scanner. However, the most common problem is usually the control unit.

There are actually two gears that you need to replace, a large one and then smaller one that rides inside it. You can purchase them both at www.fcpgroton.com These can also sometimes affect the operation of your speedometer. Do you by chance have an ABS and TRACS light on? If so the speedometer issue may be related to your ABS controller.

Usually the ABS computer knows what it is doing. You may want someone to hookup a scanner to the ABS test port.
When I had my speedometer and odometer act up, it turned out to be a bad alternator. You might want to check yours.

Sounds like a bad ABS control module is at least part of your problem. The symptoms are usually and ABS and TRACS light intermittent or constand and eventually your speedometer works intermittently or totally quits. This guy rebuilds/upgrades them for about $140. Most likely you have a check engine light on also. And if you have codes pulled it will be 0500, speed sensor. Replace the one on the rear axle and all should be good. Oh and don,t forget to have code cleared.

There are two problems here. First you need and abs control unit. They are very expensive and it is possible to rebuild them. A couple of places to call: ATE, Auto Truck Electronics, they are in Florida, and BBA Remanufacturing near Boston, MA. I have used both companies and they charge much less to rebuild them than it costs to purchase a new one. That should take care of the speedometer, brake light, and ABS light. As for the check engine, that could be anything and the car will need to be scanned. ETS light can be remedied by a trip to the dealer. There is a campaign to install new software to the Electronic Throttle Controller. This is no charge to the customer and I believe the car has to be under 200,000 miles.

your ABS module (board) is crack and a good fixman could check that to fix or change it
