When the service engine soon light is illuminated in your vehicle, it means that the on board self diagnostic system has detected a fault either in the engine, transmission, or accessory controls. when this light is illuminated, it means that there is a code stored in the vehicle memory which can be extracted with a code reader. any garage should be able to do this for you. good luck!

Basically the car has a computer that works out,for the type of driving, how many stop/starts,the duration of the drive, etc ,Then it tells you that you need a service(rather than in the old days of doing a service every 12 months/?mileage)for example on a vw you could go 40k in one year and only have one service, and one oil change...clever eh.....

SOURCE: Service engine soon lights on (Nissan Quest 2007)

This is most likely the O2 Sensor however, that light may also come on for a vacum leak or anyone of a number of other sensors. Take the vehicle to Auto Zone and ask them to use a code reader on it and tell you what the code is for. If the code is for O2 sensor as I suspect the part will cost about $40 and take maybe 20 minutes to replace your self. ($40 for part + 5 to 10 for the special socket) If it shows anything else you may want to take it to a mechanic to have the vehicle diagnosed.

The amber SERVICE VEHICLE SOON indicator is an alert to the driver whenever there are specific current codes stored in the BCM or in the event of a loss of Class 2 serial data.

What does the service engine light mean on a 2015 Ford Edge

Service Engine Soon

If the Service Engine Soon indicator light stays lit after you've started the engine, the On Board Diagnostics system (OBD) has detected a malfunction of the vehicle emissions control system. Contact your authorized dealer as soon as possible.
If indicator light is blinking, an engine misfire may be occurring, which could damage your catalytic converter. Drive in a moderate fashion (avoid heavy acceleration and deceleration), and have your vehicle serviced immediately.*
The Service Engine Soon indicator light illuminates when the ignition is first turned on (prior to engine start) in order to test the bulb, as well as indicate whether the vehicle is ready for Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) testing.
Normally, the Service Engine Soon light will stay on until the engine is cranked, then turn itself off if no malfunctions are present. However, if after 15 seconds this light blinks eight times, it means that the vehicle is not ready for I/M testing.Check this link out Gary.

Check engine soon...what does that mean???

check engine soon?

I have an amber Service Engine Soon light on my car that indicates that there is a problem with the engine that should be looked at soon.

Your car has an OBD-II system on it that allows the code to be read by a scanner that can lead to diagnosing and repairing the problem.

Some cars have an 'idiot' light that comes on at certain service intervals usually controlled by the odometer.

This can be reset by the scanner.

Yellow service engine soon light

You will need to get an OBD reading. to know exactly why the light came on. the light alone doesnt mean anything specific, hence the need for the OBD reading to understand why. Most mechanics will do this reading for free.
