so what is the part number for a 2000 ford windstar v6 3.8L. my mechanic is quoting me $350 for part and total for part and labor about $855. his rate per hour is $90 labor. seems a little pricey. i want to order the part and have him put on and tell him i found out the labor is 3 hours at most. the sway bar links are bad too so he quoted me $202 for that which is where he has to take that off to get to rack and pinion so what is a fair price for sway bar labor if he is already doing rack and pinion? i really don't have the money for either but i have to do repair or p. steering pump can go out do he says (if the fluid leaks all way out).

you must firs remove the sub frame. you will never get it out without taking this step first

It's a pretty extensive job and requires specialty tools... I'd have a local shop replace it for you to be honest.

new pumps will make noise for a while after install ive had some make noise up to 500 miles after install-just makesure youve move wheel side to side many times thats helps to bleed

you need to change the power steering filter first to see if it makes it less noisy, if that does not work then you mave have rack and pinion seals going to out. it could aslo be the power steering oil cooler or the lines colaspeing just change the hoses to the cooler it is not hard and costs 10 bucks for the hose.

I WOULD SAY POOR DESIGN.THE WAY IT WAS PUT TOGETHER.AND CHEAP PARTS LIKE WEAK METAL PARTS LIKE RACK AND PINION GEAR.

You have to drop the rear subframe down to remove the rack and pinion

On a caravan new rack and pinion cost around 250 plus labor. Probally hour or two labor so at least another 100 there. So that should be a rough estimate for you.
