I need to replace an inner CV boot on a '89 Chevy K2500 truck. How is the easiest way to accomplish this?

whats time frame between replacement and was the inner sleeve in transaxle checked or replaced from the original c/v replacement -first one sounds like improper install for boot to break or damaged by other means

You can remove the inner joint and slide the boot along the shaft,that way you can fit both boots.

how to , who can, what are all steps. are there special tools?

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
2. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Halfshaft from the vehicle
   • Snapring and bearing
   • Snapring and oil seal
   • Mounting bracket
   • CV-joint boot
   • Circlip and inner joint housing
   • Snapring and spacer
   • Inner joint balls
   • Snapring and inner CV-joint
   • To install:
     
   • Install or connect the following:
     
     • Inner CV-joint and snapring
     • Inner joint balls
     • Spacer and snapring
     • Inner joint housing and circlip. Add 150 grams CV-joint grease.
     • CV-joint boot
     • Mounting bracket
     • Oil seal and snapring
     • Bearing and snapring
   • Install the halfshaft and mounting bracket to the vehicle.
   • Check the wheel alignment and adjust as necessary.

YOU HAVE TO REMOVE WHOLE AXLE AN INSTALL AXLE IN INNER CV JIONT THEN MAKE SURE IT CLIPS IN,INSTALL BOOT AN RECLAMP CV BOOT WITH SPECIALLTY PLIERS

One would have to remove the half shaft to service the cv joint properly.

If you follow the upper radiator hose from the radiator to the engine, it's right there. 2 bolts hold the housing in place and the thermostat is under it.

you can replace just the outter but you may want to replace the whole axle alot easier

inner cv joints are the joints on the inner half of the axle shaftswhere they go into the transmission. sometimes the easiest thing to do is replace the axle shafts

go to the advanced auto parts store and purchase the Haynes manual for the car and it will tell you how to change everything on there.
