When you shift into gear from park, our Jeep jerks a bit. We have it up for sale and potential buyers are afraid its the transmission that is going. Is that always the case, is there something we can check for rather than paying a mechanic to tell us something simple.

Are you shifting into drive when its cold and the RPM's are high? If so the jolt is normal. This is pretty normal thing to happen. But since its happening How big are the jolts? is it something that just started. Cause thats not so much a sign as i drive a 96 jeep cherokee and if i just hop in and go it will give a little bit of shake in the vehicle. If the car is warm this is never a problem. After all it is a suv not a car. If the transmission on the vehicle was going you would probably have slippage into gear more then a jolt.
Please follow up with a comment after trying to see when you let the car warm up and its in lower idle rpms what happens. An i will help assist you from there. Thanks and have a great day.

It had jerked the entire time we have owned it. When I say ****, its not that bad at all not that it gives a person whiplash. I am not sure what it would feel like to have gears slipping. Another person said to push on the brakes harded, and we just tried that and it did improve the ****. Our neighbour said it is the universal joint, and insight????? Thanks again!

Make sure your tires are ALL the correct size and/or they are NOT too differant in wear. Some vehicles (4x4) are touchy in that regard!

Its only the transmision taking up the slack of the fluid drive.a tip is to allways have your foot hard on the brake when changing into gear(safety factor) now if it were a limo, that would not be right......

  • sbautz Aug 26, 2010

It did help to push on the brake hard. Would that possibly be a sign the brakes are wearing? Should we have the fluid drive looked at? Or is this normal?

  • Anonymous Aug 27, 2010

the fluid level should be checked about every 2 months,as a low level would produce the same symptoms, but as i say,it is normal for an suv.....

2004 ford explorer truck will start will go through all gears but wont move. Cant even feel the transmission sliding into gear. There is no little jerk when you pull it out of park. Any ideas?

If you don't feel the clicks going threw the gears, the shift cable could be broken. Could be the detent in the transmission. This would go in gear though. Next would be the transmission died.

Hi i have a 2001 honda accord ex v6 coup. it had an automatic transmission when i put it in reverse it jerks really hard an shakes the car sometimes. when i put it in first gear it jerks the car alittle...

I suggest you have a transmission shop take a close look at your vehicle. That year accord with a v6 and automatic transmission had a recall for the transmission and your problem seems to be a slowly dying tranny.

I have a 98 saturn sl1 and when shifting gears(park -drive) its jerks a bit. what does this means?

That can be a mount, but you would of said it jerks at all time from park to drive and when your driving. and also reverse.Going from park to drive is there a pause and do you hear a buzz noise then a gear change. If you did that would be the solenoid. So here it is from park to drive and the RPM is in range this is known also as a harsh up shift, it is mechanical in nature the clutch pack is taking more pressure than it need to achieve a gear change. In other word your transmission is mechanically worn

1999 jeep will shift first 2 gears but when it is time to go into overdrive the transmission jerks and it goes into limp mode and check engine light comes on 8 cylinder, automatic

Check your transmission fluid level to make sure the appropriate amount of fluid is in. Some transmissions will **** or cut the vechicle off if not enough fluid is in the transmission.

What kind of gear oil is required for my 1992 jeep wrangler 5 speed transmission/transfer case and how many quarts will it require

Transmission generally takes a bit less than two quarts, Use 75/90 gear lube in that (in very cold climates you can add a small amount of automatic trans fluid to keep it flowing on cold starts) Transfer case takes a bit over one quart and takes dextron mercon 3. When filling either, fluid is full when on a level surface it begins to come out of the fill hole while filling. When changing either, always make sure you can open the fill plug before draining so you know you can replace what you removed.

1990 Suzuki Escudo 4 wheel drive

As far as I know the procedure should go something like this...

Stop the vehicle, engage the parking brake and if applicable, get out and turn the hubs on the front wheels from Free, to Lock.(You may not have these on a Suzuki, they may be auto-lockers)

Get back in the vehicle and put the transmission shift selector into Neutral.

If you have a manual transfer case, move the selector-shaft to 4x4-High, or 4x4-Low -- whichever is desired. Now, putting the vehicle in gear with the transfer case is sometimes somewhat difficult. As long as the vehicle's transmission is in neutral, don't worry, the gears inside the transfer case are big and beefy -- Don't be afraid to be rough -- Again as long as the transmission is in neutral. You may also have to disengage the parking brake and slightly let the vehicle roll forward or back with your foot-brake to get the Transfer case to lock into place.

Once 4x4 of the selected High, Or Low range is selected, usually indicated by the vehicle jerking slightly with a slightly loud clank/thud. Move the Transmission selector out of neutral into your desired gear (Drive if Automatic, if Manual, whichever gear you pull out from). and voila! You should now be in 4-Wheel-Drive.

To disengage 4-Wheel-Drive. Just reverse the steps.
