On that year Audi (A6) the only two lights that would illuminate on your dash will either be for the brake light (top image in the diagram) or a headlight or tail light is out (bottom part of the diagram. So basically have a look at your lights, one of them is out.
No other lights on your dash have an "X" on them when illuminated.

tghis is the check engine light, this means u have a problem in the electroincs that control the engine or the emission system, this is outlined in the owners manual.
Have someone check and see if the brake lights come on when you press the brake pedal..The warning lamp may indicate a fuse out to the brake light circuit--if the fuse is blown/faulty then the gearshift won't move, it needs to "see" the brake circuit is on before allowing the shifter to engage.
