This is a common problem. If your 3rd brake lite works, then the problem is the turn signal switch. This componet is in the steering column. THere are a couple of variations depending on whether or not you have radio controls on the steering wheel. Either way, its a pretty detailed job requiring a pretty high level of experience and tools available. You will have to pull the steering wheel and airbag make the repair and put it all back together. If the 3rd brake lite doesn't work either, then it could be a whole different senerio.

The brake lights won't go out. I pulled the fuse so the battery doesn't go dead, but can't figure out why they are staying lit.

on your brake pedal there is a switch that controls your brake lights over time it comes to lose just enough for the switch won't come in contact with the pedal

I have changed my brake switch, fuses, and bulbs in my 1997 chevy lumina and the brake lights still will not work at all, my signal lights only work. What could be the problem?

here is howw it goes, the power from the fuse goes to the brake switch then to the signal light switch and from there to the rear lights, test for signal from the brake switch to the turn signal, if good the signal switch is bad

1998 chevy lumina: rear window brake light not working, left brake light not working, rear left turn signal not working

See if bulbs have burnt out in the left brake light and rear turn signal (one bulb if combined) and also rear center high mount brake light.

If the left turn signal has a slower speed than the right turn signal, this is a symptom of a bulb or bulbs burnt out.

Usually, the wiring is not a problem, but I would not rule wiring (or sockets) as a problem out.

Good luck on this repair.

Electrical diagrams for brake lights and turn signals, for a 1995 chevy lumina

In a Lumina if the brake lights quit working but the upper one in the rear window still works or your tun signals flash weakly or a different speeds the turn signal switch needs replaced. I will cure the problem. Not to hard a job, but does require removing the steering wheel and air bag assembly.

On my 1999 Chey Lumina. My brake lights wont come on except for the one in the back window

I was having similar issues with my '95 Lumina. It started out with the passenger side brake light not working and the turn signal switch on the column acting funny.
Eventually, someone pulled-up next to me and told me that I had no rear lights at all.
It turned out to be the turn signal switch in the sterring column.
Hope this helps.
