I have a 2000 VW beetle tdi manual tranny and just spent over $1k in replacing a the cooling fans and fan control module after the a/c stopped working. Fore about 2 wks, everything worked fine but now the a/c isnt working again. The problem was noted on a hot day after driving about 2 hrs. The a/c stopped during this drive. When I stopped, the cooling fans stayed on for about 5 min. The shop where I had the work done have checked the R134 (which was normal) and then washed their hands of me. Now, I'm on my own. I've checked all the wiring and fuses (Battery fuse box and interior fuses). The compressor doesn't engage. The fan control module (fcm) has power to the 4 pin but none from the 14 pin. The compressor doesn't have power going to it at the plug attaching from the fcm. VW dealer says the parts are warrantied (Shop bought VW parts) but I have to buy another fcm and have my first part sent in to VW before they will reimburse me for the additional purchase. How do I know if the fcm is bad? Could it be something else? I HATE ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS. Any help would be appreciated.

The cooling fan module is located below the radiator over flow tank. The discharge from the overflow tank discharges hot collant directly onto the module. Every time mine stops working we take the two wiring harness plugs off and find coolant inside the plugs...(we had to use a set of brake spring plyers to get the large plug to snap back into place) I'm gonna move the cooling module and associated wires n plugs out from under the overflow tank - dry everything off (for the third time) and see if this solves the problem.

this may or may not help u jim, i have a 2000 vw beetle. i am currently troublshooting an a/c problem, my effort brought me to a module (could b relay) located underneath where the battry sits. that battery seat comes out. it is at this module where both fans on my car plugs into. hope this help.................terry

The cooling fans work with a sensor. It has to reach a certain temperature in order for it to work. Maybe it is not the fan. Fan not coming is definitely caused by a faulty thermostat.

It is a common problem with the beetle, the cause is a malfunction in the cooling control module.

The module is surveilled by the on board diagnosis system, so you should bring the car to the shop and let them run some tests with the diagnosis computer.

I am assuming you are referring to the cooling fan on the motor. If not and talking about inside fan jump to paragraph titled INSIDE FAN below. There are three fuse panels on top of the battery and one on the drivers side of car inside door on dash panel. Be sure and check the inside fuses first. There should be a fuse map card on the door to the fuse panel that tells you which location the FAN fuse is in. After that point look at the battery panel and the connections should have what appear to be flat silver pieces of metal flat on top of the battery, with wires connected on both sides. If you have a multimeter set it to continuity and test both sides to make sure power is flowing. Also check for corosion, etc. There are also blade fuses on top of battery that can be checked by removing and looking to see if they are blown. This would show as a burn mark and the metal would be seperated.

Not sure what makes you think its the fuse on the battery that could cause this issue unless somehow you see a defect or damage to this area. It is usually the last to blow unless exposed to water or left open, shorted, etc.

Second thing to be sure is that the car has reached temperature to cause cooling fan to kick in.

INSIDE FAN: If the inside AC/Heater fan has stopped working this is more than likely the fan control knob located in center of the three knobs. The left is temperature control knob for Hot Cold, Center is Fan speed, and Right is vent choice. Unfortunately the unit is a single piece and the fan control switch is not replaceable by itself. You have to buy the whole module. The left and right are cable actuated but the fan control is electric and can short out and cause fan failure total or not run at high speed, not turn off, etc. Suggestion is to search EBAY for your model and lookf for AC control, Fan Control, etc. I would also suggest a Bentley manual for your beetle as it is the BIBLE used by VW mechanics at the dealer to diagnose and work issues. If you fancy DIY on some minor repairs this is the book for you and has 1600 pages of very detailed troubleshooting and procedures, with pictures and is easy to follow. You can find them on ebay as well for about 80 dollars. Be sure and get the correct one for your model year

Sounds like the resister pack has gone bad. its located on the passenger side under the dash on the bottom of the fan housing.

check the fan relay

fan relay control module and replace both high and low speed fans. and thats normal for the fans to come on with the a/c on thats what cools the ac condenser

Forget it. The automatic has different electronic components like transmission modules .sensors, ECM and cooling systems. Flywheel motor mounts and supports and sub-frame parts are different also. All of this would require a complete different engine and body harness and switches. Look for one with an automatic in it. try www.internetautoguide.com

sounds like you will need a new compressor, it is a common issue on bettles 1999 and newer! it is about a $900 total job!
