Should first adjust the brakes in the back drums so that the brakes are tighter against the drum, so that the handbrake will be lower.

There should be an adjustment that spins that makes the brakes tighter against the drums on both sides in the rear.

One can also tighten the cables up, but if they are rusty, sometimes they break.

Today my car rolled down an small hill but the mysterious thing is my handbrake was up (or on as I thought). The woman who ran to tell me, my car had banged into her car, looked in the window and saw...

Hand brake is not working properly or you did not raise it high enough. That is why you always need to turn your front wheels into the curb when parked on a hill, so if your brakes fail the car will be stopped by the curb.

Hand brake adjustment on KIA Carnival

The Kia Carnival has drum brakes on the rear and they are self adjusting. They can however be adjusted by working the handbrake lever up and down a few times, if it has not been previously adjusted by using the cable adjustment, then this will probably not work, and it is something I come across quite a lot. if all this fails, then it is a matter of taking the wheels off and removing the drum. firstly check the position of the handbrake actuating lever (its connected to the cable) with the handbrake off (wheels chocked of course) the lever should be as far back as possible to the brake shoe, if it isn't check that you have a little bit of slack on the cable and it is not seized if not adjust the cable off a little so the levers return fully. if you look you will see the self adjuster you can turn the notched wheel a few clicks and then put the drum back on. make sure it is not binding when you turn it (a slight rub is ok) tap the drum (top, bottom, left, right) to centre the shoes (this is important because it will give false adjustment if you don't). once you have done this to both sides, double check both wheels are still running free. replace wheels a try handbrake, it should be ok now. Check how many clicks you need to pull the lever to apply brake and adjust the cable just enough to remove any slack in it, NO MORE. Warning! DO NOT HIT THE DRUM HARD AS IT WILL CAUSE FRACTURES. I hope that has been of some help to you.

Adjusting hand brake

there is a cable adjuster under the center console if its got a rear ashtray just pull that out and look there.but you should remove the rear brake drums and check the shoes. and the handbrake fulcrum levers, they can sieze up. also make sure the levers return to the stops with handbrake off and the auto adjusters are working ok before adjusting the handbrake cable! it helps brake performance if you give the auto adjusters a bit of a tweak before putting the drums back on. manually adjust 3-4 clicks or until the drum goes back without binding.

The handbrake adjuster is under the centre console behind the lever. If its coming too high, check that the levers at the rear brake calipers are free and moving back to their stop position - they are prone to seizing up on older or little used cars. They can usually be freed off with a bit of lube and working the lever back and forwards. If that dosn't work, unfortunately you'll need new calipers. Do not adjust the handbrake cable unless the caliper levers are at their stops as this seriously reduces handbrake efficiency!
