Sounds to me like you need a new ignition switch. not the ignition in which you put the key into but the switch that is mounted to the back of the ignition switch. there is a white round switch mounted to the back of the ignition cylinder. I thing it has a problem. so you don't need the while ignition cylinder, but the electrical portion of it only.

SOURCE: Check Engine Light 1996 Nissan Maxima

The best way is to use a scan tool to clear the codes, that will turn off the light, also disconnecting the battery over night may work, but no completely sure about that, it varies from year to year.

SOURCE: Ihave a 1996 Nissan Maxima.

You need to program it. Here is how you doit.
Step by step:

1- get inside and lock all door with the "power dool lock switch"
2- insert the key into the ignition 6 times "IN and OUT" nice and steady until your hazards flash on dashboard. You can just keep inserting the key until you see the hazards flash, but 6 times should do it / get you into the program mode.
3-once the hazards flash, turn the key to ACC position (dash light up, but car is not running)
4-press any button on the remote (hazards should flash)
5-turn key OFF
6-remove key
7-unlock door with "power door lock switch"
8-open door DONE.
Good luck

SOURCE: 2003 Nissan Altima 2.5S, Check Engine Light Problem.

this problem could be caused by the mass air flow censor, i had the same problem with my car. it is really pricey at the dealer so you might want to check elsewhere for this part. I found one at a scrap yard for 85% less that the dealer and i also got life time warranty, the dealer does not offer any warranty on this part.

it is a cable that links you transmision to the dashboard
i am not sure what the name of the cable is
but if you hold the start position and switch the gears to neutral it will start.

1996 Nissan Maxima started 'locking itself' while in the garage at home. Just in past few weeks. Ideas?

if it has remote keyless entry a fob could be malfunctioning(common).try removing batteries from fobs and see if incident stops.

Replace the battery in my 2007 maxima keyless entry

if it is not a intelakey then yes. it is a 2 piece cover, just use a flat screw driver to pry it apart and it has a battery similar to a watch inside.

I have a 1995 Nissan Maxima and I am not able to get the keyless entry system to work. I put in a new battery and that didn't work. I've been told it needs to be reprogrammed. How can I do that?

You have to stick the key in and out of the ignition 8 times in less than 10 seconds when its done correctly you will get an unusual dash lights flash turn the switch on and hit the lock button on your keyless entry pad.

Keyless remote entry

First try to replace batteries on remotes, 2. try reconfiguring the remotes only if the first doesn't work. And at last just try unplugging the negative of the vehicles battery plus check all your fuses the make sure that you're not have having any electric interference. Good luck !!!

Door lock

Make sure the battery on your Keyless Entry remote is a working battery.

If thats not it, it could very well be the actual button on your Keyless Entry remote being faulty. But it could also be a relay in the car aswell. Depending on the cost of a Relay versus the cost of a Keyless Entry remote, I would try to replace either/or and try again, whichever is cheaper. The Relay may be cheaper, but your Key-FOB sounds like it could be the cause.
