Question about 1994 GMC Suburban

1 Answer

I have a 1994 Suburban K1500. It recently started to shudder only when shifting into OD. It is most noticeable before it is completely warmed up. It only appears to happen when it goes into OD. All other shifting is fine. The vehicle has high miles but the trans and TC was replaced with a reman less than 20-30k ago.

It sounds like your torque converter is not unlocking. Best thing to do is take it to a transmission shop and have them hook it up to a tech 2 scanner and hope it's will have a DTC code in it's history. it's hard to say what is going on, it could be as simple as a oil and filter change due to the loose of transmission fluid line pressure from dirty filter, or a faulty TPS that sends signal to the ECM that will control the torque converter lockup solenoid and line pressure solenoid. Best thing to do and have it scanned since that is cheaper then and rebuilt transmission of something simple. Oh and check the transmission fluid for level and condition, it should be bright red, not dark like burgundy. Keep me posted, be glad to help you save some money.

Sound like you're going to need to drop the transmission pan so you can replace the filter along with fresh transmission fluid. I had a problem like that many years ago, this correct the problem... I also know that the throttle positioning sensor will also cause transmission shifting problems. I would start with the filter change then go from there... Good luck.

CHECK YOUR OWNERS MANUAL.TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE.I HAVE SEEN THOSE TRUCKS PULLING CAMPERS.YOU NEED TO HOOK UP A AUXILIARY COOLER TO RADIATOR AND TRANSMISSION TO KEEP TRANSMISSION FROM OVER HEATING.WHEN TOWING PUT STRAIN ON TRANSMISSION CAUSE THEM TO OVER HEAT.

1997 k1500. I started it today, negative temps, and I don't have 1st, or overdrive.

unplug the trailer first to see if it is something in it''s wiring.
not going into OD could just be that the load is too much to handle in OD.
speedo and tach I would start by checking fuses.
sounds like the problems are all related.

Is the car shifting? Only the light comes on? The tach should read 1800 at 60 mph in OD? I think that's right, check yours out. I have a 2000, and it has a terrible noise coming from the rear end, I don't know if it needs oil or what. I haven't gotten to it because of the weather lately.

My 94 Z71 4x4 will not start out in first gear. It starts in second and shifts to drive perfectly but will not shift into OD.

Its a long shot but, when was the last time you had the transmission fluid flushed and a filter change? doesn't always work but its much cheaper to do than a new trans.

Won't shift onto overdrive until engine warms up.

That's actually a feature, not a problem. The emissions control system will not let it go into OD until it's warmed up.

If your truck warms up in a normal amount of time, then you're all set.

Last year, my 4Runner started taking too long to warm up, so it wouldn't go into OD for a long time. In my case, it was that the thermostat was stuck open, so coolant was flowing freely even when the engine was still cold. Replacing the thermostat was quick and easy, and it's good as new again.

It sounds like that you have a valve in the valve body, located above the filter, that is sticking due to some of the debris not caught by the clogged filter. If the trans tune does not get it then you will have to remove the valve body then remove the valves manually and clean them. Recomend that you have a professional do it due to the complex nature.
