Determining an IssueWhether the transmission is automatic or manual makes a difference. For example, in a manual Jeep, you might feel resistance when shifting from gear to gear, whereas in an automatic, the tachometer might rev up to 4,000 or 4,500 RPM before shifting. Although these are indicative of the same issue, the way the issue is represented in the vehicle feels totally different. Transmission troubles can be roughly summed up in two ways: either the car won't shift, or it won't shift without resistance. The two most common problems, and often the easiest to diagnose and repair, are issues with the transmission fluid and the filter. Checking for leaks is simple. Determine whether the transmission fluid (which is red) is leaking. The filter base, the drainage hole, near the engine, by the transmission cooler or radiator, and at the selector shaft or speed sensor are virtually the only places the transmission may leak. Replacing the filter if you have not done so also takes the guesswork out of remedying an issue, and can save valuable time and money. Persistent ProblemsSome problems, like a transmission refusing to shift between gears, or running the Jeep's tachometer to unreasonable highs before doing so, won't be cleared up by a once-over of the filter and fluid delivery systems. When a gear won't engage---or takes too long to engage---and all other systems have been absolved of responsibility, one must look elsewhere. Shifting problems, especially in a manual vehicle, can indicate some serious issues. Difficulty shifting can indicate transaxle issues, especially in higher gears, and often the only solution is a full rebuild of the transaxle (not exactly a DIY job). Repairs to a worn shift lever or shift linkage, commonly associated with such problems, can be attempted at home if you know definitively that these issues are causing the problem. Tansmission RebuildsMost transmission problems are not do-it-yourself fixes. A transmission is a complicated and intricate piece of machinery, with many parts that must all be working in harmony for the Jeep to keep running. If these simple fixes with transmission don't take care of the issue, it is very likely that the car will need to be taken to a licensed Jeep mechanic. For instance, in Jeeps, a complex mechanism called the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) is often at fault for transmission issues, and repairs to the TPS cannot and should not be attempted at home by an unlicensed professional. TPS issues cannot be remedied by replacing transmission fluid, checking for leaks or replacing the filter---the job is simply too difficult to attempt on one's own. The sad fact about transmissions is that, after a while, they have the tendency to weaken and finally fall apart (if unchecked). Simple troubleshooting along with educating yourself on basic transmission issues is a surefire way to prevent overpaying for repairs; but remember, there's no way around having that transmission rebuilt if there's no alternative.

1997 jeep Cherokee 4.0. Transmission does fine then after running for a few won't shift until 3.5 rpm then shift smoothly then can Shift manual and does fine like that.

Valve body problems. When engine heat starts to build in the fluid and metal parts inside the transmission, the valve body expands which will cause pressure problems.

94 isuzu rodeo w0nt shift outta 2nd gear why

why double post and not add info????

like engine size ?
4wd?
and trans model.?
best i can tell your trans has no TCM.
so is true hyrdamatic. (no computer brain shifts)
so needs many tests first. to find why it will not upshift to 3rd.
governer? be on top of list.
as is stuck TV cable
or leaking vacuum modulator valve. if it has one.
if you have this trans. on the big V6
then
4L30-E.

see that E on the end, it is TCM shifted.
the trans has a side plate that anyone can read, tells you what is there.
here is the wiki on it.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_4L30-E_transmission

read that?

see the 2 solenoids 425/435?
if yes, that is TCM shifted box, and must be scanned or do the FSM book, TCM flash codes, the book tell you who to do that.
\
http://www.makcotransmissionparts.com/mm5/graphics/Catalog-pdf/4L30E.pdf

this is a TCM brain auto shifted box, and must be scanned first
if the trans slips, that is a WHOLE OTHER MATTER.

What are possible causes of P1768 code on a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser?

Do the easiest things first:
Check the battery earth lead (bear in mind that if you disconnect the batter you will probably have to re-enter the radio code). Check where it connects to the body/engine block - make sure it is clean and secure.

Then check every other earth lead you can find

I have a 94 isuzu rodeo v-6. 3.2 automatic. Trans . I replaced it with a 93 automatic trans. And it will not engage in any gears any thoughts to what it might be .?

is if full of Dexron VI now? TO THE COLD MARK?
and after startup, in park, it holds the cold mark?
then rises to the hot mark.>?
so the old trans was dead, so you bought another used, trans, that is 21 years old and expect it to work great? ok....
and did you drop the pan, and replace the filter?
the pump can suck Dexron VI through a packed filter.
and while the pans is do you have the shift soleniods here.
if yes your trans has a TCM and does all shifting,
but manual mode would work if, TCM is unplugged.

so if you manually move the side shift lever. to drive, Lo or reverse
the car will not move. im I right.? (false neutrals?) right?
why not say what it does.. not just (not engage) (creeps in gear?)
does the transmission act likes its in neutral? and RPM rises fast with right foot and car fails to move?
don't use the shift lever, use the transmission side lever. to prove the trans is failing
94 rodeo.... first i must look up what trans is there.
there are 2 types. (hyradmatic, and TCM electronic)
see? and many car makes have both types same year, yes,,, that makes for online help near impossible. lacking the side plate
numbers on the ORIGINAL trans..... a fact !!!

all answers are USA cars. (USA forum it is)
I will now quote the FSM (factory serv. man.) book facts for 1994
The 4L30-E transmission, the E means , electronically shifted.
needs a working TCM to shift all gears automatically.
tcm = transmission control module, (can be by self or part of PCM)

did you adjust the shifter like the book?
see bottom photo.
if reverse is dead, then the below is set wrong or trans is bad.
(or lacks proper fluid level or the filter is packed.)
the lever is held at N, with a rubber band
and the mech, adjusts the trans lever to N.
(standard steps on all a/T boxes)

25722445-2f5dzn2kvqcmxgnp5h420nyp-5-0.jpg next clues.

this is the French GM trans in your car.
its electronically shifted. if not, its a true Hyrdamatic.
25722445-2f5dzn2kvqcmxgnp5h420nyp-5-1.jpg

25722445-2f5dzn2kvqcmxgnp5h420nyp-5-3.jpggot those 3 solenoids. is the connector below , connected?

my best advice, get reverse to work first...
that is 100% hydramatic mode. (lever to R , at drivers hand and lever at trans in R detent !!!

95 accord v-tec was slipping when warmed up put a used tranny in and did the same thing then the next day it wont even go anywhere in drive revs like it is in neutral surely it not two trannys with the...

is this a transmission question
the A/T will not do what.
there are like 100 faults symptoms on any A/T
tell what it does right and wrong?

my guess is all forward gears and reverse are dead
and sure it slips, if in 1st gear or REV.and ar dont move
and engine is at 3000 rpm ,its slip city
this transmissing is shifted electronically
the Model of the tranny ends in E, means that.
so the first test (all this ever word is in the FSM under slips)
you see if the TCM (tranny brain) has errors stored.
that is in the FSM. (factory service manual)
most old cars with TCM have flash codes for engine and tranny separate. so do that.
you do know the transmission must be perfectly grounded
or the TCM will not be able to send commands to the trans , right?
seen many cars with the Factory trans ground strap missing. too many.
if the TCM is happy, we then make sure that
the shift solenioid lines have the correct logic, to get in to say
drive or Reverse (you pickone,)
then measure it with a voltmeter, (all this is in the FSM)
make 100% sure the voltmeter neg. lead id ground to the transmission casing (so i can see the ground fail)
i take my 3 or 4 readings, for each sol. line.
and say they all pass. 0v,. 0v , 12v test. that means
the TCM has told the Trans what to do,
if it trans slips the trans is bad or the clutch is dry or bad.

in fact, ive made up a switch box with toggle switches,
that plugs in to the tranny and and shift it like a manual trans, all day long. 1 switch for each sol. line
100% sure way to prove what end is bad. TCM or gear box.

ask questions.

2001 grand cherokee?
nor years of all parts swapped.
swaps are super complex topics, endless possibles.

dont expect magic from any TCM.
they cant tell you ever possible way things can be wrong
it will fail to shift right if things are wrong,
the trans TCM can go to limphome mode, read the service manual chapter 21 yet its free, posted here 300 times.
forget the silly engine , light (CEL) use only a scan tool one that can read all factory codes not some $20 tool.
CEL lamp is for failing smog. only. never trust it, if out.

i say bad shift solinoids.
the TCM can see late shift error.s but maybe not all.
stick in 1st is a hard failure.
all inputs to the TCM must be correct for the shift to 2nd happens.
check all inputs.
if those are then see if the TCM did shift to 2nd, but the solenoids ignored the logic inputs to the solenoids.
solenoids have many failure mods
dead. (stuck closed)
stuck open, valve open.
or leaking. (leaking can cause stuck in 1st and confuse any TCM)

leaking means breached, valve leaks where it must not. ever.

2001 honda accord will not go into overdrive

Ok, make sure the tcm is connected properly. there is a o/d shift solenoid that is controlled by this device(tcm/pcm). if the wires and module aren't connected properly or, if the tcm/pcm is malfunctioning, it will render the OD inoperable. inspect the tcm and wires on the trans for correct connections and fit. test the module for its operational value and, pull the pan on the trans to test the OD shift solenoid as well.

94 dodge intrepid won't start.

Sounds like trans range switch. It is stuck in 2nd because it has a trans code in the tcm. Chrysler calls this (limp-in mode). You need to scan the tcm for codes, It likely has a code for the range switch. Hope this helps. By the way the range switch is also the neutral safety switch for the starter.
