I recently bought a 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport, the headlights would only work with the tilt steering adjustment at the middle position, up or down the light would go out. Now does not matter what position the tilt steering wheel is in, the headlights only come on when you pull high bean lever towards you and hold it there. Thought it could be a bare wire but have not found one yet. Any other suggestions

SOURCE: Jeep Headlights not working. High beam works

had the same problem on my 92....check under the hood on the drivers side, towards the front, there is a "junction box" with all of the lighting wires connecting from the switches to the lights. My wires were all corroded inside,so I cleaned the ends and bought a new box from the local electronic supply store. The problem has not come back.

Cheers

How do you replace a serpentine belt for 1996 jeep cherokee sport?

You need to loosen up the power steering pump and un-adjust the jack bolt that runs under it. Then just follow the diagram on the sticker on the radiator support. If you can't find the sticker, I'll give you the routing if you ask. to tighten the belt just tighten the jack bolt and lock down the bolts you loosened on the pump. Tight is when you have about one inch deflection in the longest run of the belt,
Loose is better than too tight as you can re-tighten it if necessary. Too tight will damage pulley bearings.

replace the power steering pump, the hoses are an odd size and you have to buy a wrench for it, the transmission you can change the gasket and filter and replace the fluids,, probably the engine is dripping from the rear main bearing seal, this is best left to someone who knows what they are doing.

HOW TO SYNCHRONIZE BACKUP LIGHTS WITH REVERSE GEAR ON 1996 JEEP C

The neutral safety switch can be adjusted to make this work. (loosen it and turn , then lock it down. This changes neutral start position as well so make sure both work when you're finished! Switch is on right side of trans. Switch is about $220 so don't break it!

I need to remove the steering column cover on 1996 jeep cherokee

Yeah- you have to remove three screws from under the steering colum cover plate. Mine were T25 Torx. It's a long hole, so you have to get a stand-alone T25 Torx driver, rather than a bit.

After that, the bottom will pop right off. To get the top off, grab the tilt adjuster and twist it counterclockwise until it comes out. Pull it out and the top cover comes right off.
